EPL switch and phono options

Will the EPL switch allow someone to have an equalizer hooked up into premap, or would it be better to hook it up at the outputs of the preamp (between preamp and power amp)? Also will either the internal phono or external phono options support a moving coil cartridge with a 0.5mV output?

I would recommend you use the EPL loop.  That keeps the processing ahead of the volume controls.

0.5 mV will not work with our phono sections.  You will need a step up phono pre-amp designed for low output cartridges.

If the EQ has a level control, what would where it is placed, matter?  All you are doing is manipulating tone, not volume.

The main advantage of putting in in the EPL loop is that you can easily switch it out of the circuit path when you want.

Not true. A graphic equalizer will raise the volume of the frequencies you select, that is how it re-shapes the spectrum to change room responses/acoustics. There are a few  models of graphic equalizers that would compensate for increasing ( or decreasing) frequency change such as the old Soundcraftsmen EQs with the differential comparator type of circuits, that let the user re-balance the output back to normal after changing slider positions.

The EPL loop stands for external processor loop.  An equalizer qualifies for as an external processor.

Also, equalizers were generally used to tame room or speaker issues that usually don't vary by recording.  That way the volume and tone controls can be used to adjust for specific recordings.

I have a vintage SAE pre-amp with two band parametric EQ. Using the EPL on my Insight pre-amp I can take signal out to the SAE, run it through the tone (EQ) section and back to the AVA via the EPL with no problems. Wayner is right, though, one needs to be aware of ALL the options for volume control when doing this.....and the fact that the EQ used will probably be way noisier than the AVA circuits......is the extra noise worth the tone control?   For me, it was not (even as I was trying to clean up 78 recordings).....I eventually abandoned the EQ.

Cheers,
