New Project.
« on: 3 Feb 2010, 04:15 pm »
Okay, so for my project that S Clark has given us, I'm wanting something that looks nice, has a good bass response as well as a clean noise, and can be easily moved. I was thinking of something modern, like the 4 ft tall speakers, just in a smaller ratio that fits a 6 1/2 in. woofer. As I do move along with this, i may start another project that is exactly like the 4 ft tall speakers that i have currently, which are OLDER than me, and the subs are about to just fall to dust. Any ideas? also! The ideas on the insulation. Clark gave the idea of tile and carpet insulation, and i was seeing how that worked and how to correctly place it. Also, does anyone know a fairly cheap price on particleboard? I would like to start making my box asap. Thanks!

Silicon,
Remember that your speaker size will be dictated by the woofer/woofers that you
are using.  Put the parameters into a box program (there are several that work well) to find out the size and recommended box type.  Then post the parameters here so that the guys will have enough data to be able to make suggestions.
...and if 4 ft tall is important, you may have to put in a divider in the box to use only part of its volume.  Height is actually important- look around at where manufacturers put their tweeters.  Look at pictures in the gallery section to see how people set up their systems.  There is a reason why you don't find small speakers sitting on the floor.

Just an FYI, use MDF instead of particleboard :)

Great idea. I just looked at the setups some people had. A couple were the ones i like, and that was the one you described. the upper half contains the speakers, and about the rest of it was just a divider and the lower end of the case. That looks like a design i would hope to go after if i can get the money raked up for it. As for the placements for regular speakers and the tweeter, ive noticed its usually the tweeter in the upper left, and the speaker on the right about 1in. lower than the tweeter, and then the woofers about 3-4 in. lower than the speaker, and its smack dab in the center of the lower box. Like i said, as soon as i get the money, I may do that setup!
Update- Something like this. http://www.parts-express.com/projectshowcase/indexn.cfm?project=Tritrix OR http://www.parts-express.com/projectshowcase/indexn.cfm?project=Jubilee. Both of these arent as i described, and probably will be modded to fit the design I am striving for.

Okay, sorry for double posting, but i just drew out the box that I'd like to make. I know im using the Dayton DA175-8, But I need Guidance on what speaker I need. Clark, you mentioned the tweeter, and that looks a bit expensive. is there any way I could get the Speaker/Tweeter from you, or do you have one? the buy on the tweeter is 75. Thats.. pretty pricey, lol. I can afford the Box perhaps, but the mechanicals.. well thatd take a while. :]

Mod- Never mind, the tweeter price is 12 dollars. mustve looked at something totally different haha. help though!

Silicon,
Your tweeter will be provided by the generous folks here at Audiocircle, unless you just want something specific. I just haven't told you guys which ones you get yet. However, the tweeters that we have are better than the Dayton silk dome that the Tri-Trix project uses.  I've used that tweeter before, and really, I just don't care for it.  Quality control has been an issue on that tweeter for years.  Also, the Tri-Trix is a variation of a transmission line design.  Look at what a couple of the pro's here had to say about the problems of those designs just a day or so ago here in the Jr. Audiophile circle.  Also, google the model number of your woofer.  You'll find several designs using it.

Good advice.  MDF is easier to work, more dense, acoustically dead, glues better, holds screw pretty fair.  The main downside is the dust that gets kicked up is extremely fine and pretty bad for you to breathe. Absolutely wear a dust mask when cutting it
