Hey, I don't know if that unit works but I think it looks pretty cool. I love AVA products but don't think the faceplate looks any more cheesy than normal AVA styling. The labels are large with a standard looking font (no Old English or funky font) and it looks like it belongs on that faceplate. The "as is" is pretty standard and appears to be a CYA move to prevent claims or complaints that result from shipping damage.
I'd check this guy's history and call him on the phone. Maybe a local buyer could get a good deal. The great thing about AVA gear is that Frank can usually update to the latest standards. Also, I've tested some older AVA gear and, as long as it's not modifed by some yahoo, they sound pretty darn good. I tested an old Omegastar amplifier years ago and was very impressed. They guy was selling it for a great price and I still kick myself for not buying it! Even Frank's older designs sounded great.
