Dolby True HD 5.1 vs. Dolby Digital 5.1
« on: 2 Feb 2010, 01:36 am »
I have a 7.1 system in my theater, but have not found any movies that are more than 5.1.
The difference between the two is understood, but it's my experience that the 5.1 digital version sounds better than than the 5.1 True HD version.
Could this be because my true HD is an analog source from the Blu-ray player, where as the digital 5.1 is processed by my pre/pro? The pre/pro processing is so much smoother and better balanced.
This was very evident when playing Diana Krall Live in Rio blu-ray disc.
Any thoughts?

There are DD-EX movies out there. The one that I can remember really well was Pearl Harbor (2001). I remember this well as I ended up blowing out a brand new Cerwin Vega subwoofer during the cannon firings.  :duh:

TrueHD is a MUCH higher resolution, so something is wrong.  Your Blue Ray 5.1 analog is going where? Hopefully not to same reciver (which is digitizing analog...possibly your issue).  TrueHD is up to 24/192 and Dolby Digital is lossy (aka MP3) at about 384kbps.

Tell us about the two signal paths.

I'm running 5.1 analog out of my Sony Blu-ray into an analog input (NAD) and analog out to the amplifiers. In this case the NAD is just a pass through volume control, nothing else.
The audio in The Bourne Trilogy is very good in DTS Tru HD, but could not tell that much difference in the DTS 5.1.
But the Sony is a 1st gen player (did a firmware update for tru HD), so perhaps it's time to go with LG or OPPO.
Again, the music on Diana Krall was much better balanced (less boomy bass) in DTS 5.1 going through the processor.
Thanks for your input!

Could also be that your processor/recover does better bass management (speaker size, crossover frequency, delays, etc.) than your Sony BD player.

A quick reply without reading the thread in it's entirety.
My apologies.
But you may find this interesting:
