BCD/BDA combo ... Best of Both Worlds
« on: 2 Feb 2010, 12:00 am »
Hello folks

lately i have been contemplating whether owning both units has  any real advantages. If listening to just cds then you might just say no, just go for the bcd. Or if you do a lot of listening with a harddrive then it might make more sense to use the bda. And this  leads one to choosing which path.... BCD or BDA. Well i have bought both and i have come across an interesting performance benefit of using both.

The BCD and BDA are very similar in sound. That is if you use the BCD as transport with the BDA. It is very easy to hook them up and toggle between inputs to get a direct comparison> The BCD on its own and the BCD/BDA combo. Small differences but really negligible. However this has its advantages.

I dont like to use  silver cables, I like copper cables. Copper cables gives me what i call best of both worlds. They sound good on all genres of music and don't exibit any of the bad trebles issues i get from silver cables. But i do like silver cables with Jazz and Symphony. Rock and blues and basically all forms of poorly recorded music its a big no with silver.

This brings me to where i am now. I find with using both units i can put silver on the BCD analogue out to my pre, and i use copper from my bda to my pre. I get best of both worlds since the two units are very close sounding and it maintains the Bryston front end sound.

This is still very early for me but i find this a big performance advantage of using both. This also can be tailored nice for  peoples own individual tastes....

Harmonic technology truthlink for copper, and Empircal audio and harmonic tech prosilway mk2 on silver.

The Empirical audio are silver but they i think sound more like copper.....  :icon_lol: They are unique cable.

No i havent, i would like to give a go. The atlas cable i have is really nice and i would be leary on using anything else. The BDA has a real nice coax in, but i would also be interested in AES to try.

hey, Rob!

could you post a "bigger" pic of the analog balanced output cables (from your 26 into the amp). they look a bit different to the analog balanced output cables from your BCD & BDA?!

Hi Al,

The cables look different, I think you are correct.

I have to guess this bit as I have not seen this system in the flesh but....

It looks like the output from the BP pre is a "Y" split cable to run both amps in bi amp mode.

The XLR does nothave a large enough cable entry for two cables so they are split down prior to the XLR and a new heat shrink cover fitted.......

I build these cables in the UK (Not for Bryston/PMC) so thats what I think.

Andy.

Here is one that wa typed aways back
Top Shelf button Unit Bryston BDA-1 connected Balanced XLR to BP26 input Balance 1

Top Shelf Middle Unit Bryston BP26 out  Balanced XLR Right to Bryston 4Bsst2 Left
and  Right Channel of 4Bsst2

Same for the left Channel of the Bp26 out  Balanced XLR Left to Bryston 4Bsst2 Left and  Right Channel of 4Bsst2.

Top Shelf Top Unit Byston BCD-1 connected Balanced XLR to BP26 input Balance 2
As well I’m using The Digital out puts of The BCD-1 going to BDA-1
1- AES-EBU going to BDA-1
1-Digital Coax SPDIF BNC to BDA-1

The RCA Cables are to Connect my Tuner L/R to BP26
The power Cables are the originals that came along with my Bryston Gear.

My Equipment is all plugged into my New RM 20

As far as the Balanced cables Go to my 4Bsst2x2 .I'll have to ask James to give me some Help

Not sure what you mean here but in a Y connector 2 sets of cable ends are attached at one end of the XLR  out to single ends at the Y.

Robert has 2 x 4Bsst2

1 for the left Speaker

1 for the Right Speaker

My set up is called Vertical Bi Amp IN STEREO

Left Channel 1 amp 4bsst2
Right Channel 1 amp 4bsst2

I'm not sure if the Connectors XLR or Balanced are the same as my Interconnects

Hi Robert,

Yes your using Balanced XLR 'Y' connectors to allow you to do the vertical bi-amping.
