I hate country music, but I have an album from "Truck Stop" that I love.

It is the perfect country music style of the early 80's, beautifully performed and sung, all in German, set in Germany.  Driving on the autobahn, snowing like hell, late at night, listening to Hank Snow and Charlie Pride on Armed Forces Network.  Great stuff!
Back in the old days when friends would ask if I had any C/W music I could copy to cassette for them, "Truck Stop" is what they'd get, with no warning.

They'd NEVER ask again.

Knew a surgical nurse that HATED C/W, but the surgeon loved it and insisted on it the O.R.   Once when they had opened up the patient she put that tape in the system, and really got his attention.  Wonder if the patient made it................?

Are we talking about 'guilty pleasures' or just waking up to a genre or even specific band that you'd never considered?

I will freely admit to being a musical snob when I was young, mostly out of some misdirected intellectual arrogance. I only listened to 'real' musicians, Pink Floyd, Yes, Cream, Miles and Coltrane....etc.....in other words.....guys (and a few gals) who could 'play'. I just didn't get stuff like punk or metal. I used to call Van Halen, 'Van Walen'. As I got older it hit me how great Eddie and the boys really were, and how much fun punk and metal could be. (and yes, I now know Eddie was indeed a superb 'player')

Heck today, Tom Waits is one of my favorite musicians, and you can't call him much of a singer. No hard guitar parts on Nirvana records, but damn, they were bloody brilliant. And so it goes.

As far a 'guilty pleasures'. I will still probably never walk into the local record shop and buy anything by Bon Jovi or Journey, but if one of their songs comes on the car radio, I'll crank it up. They both knew how to write and perform really good pop music.

I was watching TV several years ago when the movie "8 Mile" came on.  As I had nothing else to do, I watched it.  And I enjoyed it.  Most amazingly, though, I just loved Eminem's song "Lose Yourself", which was initially pretty embarrassing.  Well, my wife decided that I deserved to get some music for my birthday, and went out and purchased Eminem's best-of album, "Curtain Call", just because I'd obviously become a fan.

I've listened to that disc once or twice, and enjoyed it more than I would have imagined.  But not enough to listen to it any more often than once or twice.  However, when nobody's home, I'll occasionally  put on "Lose Yourself", which I still think is an awesome song.

I've tried to repay my wife for the gift of Eminem:  I've bought her Bon Jovi, Journey and (worst of all) Styx over the past few years.  However, only the Bon Jovi has made it only the music server.  Thank god.

Tears for Fears first few LPs were pretty goofy, but as they got into Seeds of Love, Elemental and Raoul and the Kings of Spain, things definitely evolved.

Depesche Mode is another band. Started out goofy, but by the time they hit Violator, Exciter, Songs of Faith and Devotion, Playing the Angle and lastly, Sounds of the Universe, They have turned into an Electronica Metal band with some pretty heavy and scary stuff. Great for testing your speakers or system.

Also I always thought that Billy Idol was a goofy bastard. But I have all of his LPs and am looking for Cyberpunk on LP (I have the CD). It's fricken awesome, especially cranked.

I like Nitty Gritty Dirt Band and Supertramp. Should I feel guilty about these?

I think Neil Diamond sucks.

I think Neil Diamond suck too.

But to answer the question, I suppose it depends on who I'm hiding my embarrassment from.
A few examples:
- If one of you guys come over, you won't hear some of the low quality MP3s I have. Tommy Bolin, "Post Toastee" comes to mind. Damn good song to crank, but sounds like crap. And anything by Jack Johnson. Plain and simple, the sound quality is crap (on the recordings I have).
Sure, there are some artists you (as audio dorks) will never hear at my house, like the occasional Mary J. Blige. I specifically mentioned her figuring some of you might like a tasty morsel to blackmail me with in the future. But in all honesty, I'll never say in public  what I've been known to crank. That's my dirty little secret. Bite me.

- If my Mom comes over, well.....That limits the options greatly. She won't hear 99% of what I have.

- When my eleven year old sons friends come over, wow.......They've busted my playing what my wife calls elevator music. Most of my normal tunes I find slightly embarrassing when "the cool crowd" comes over.

- My wife. Well now.....I don't get embarrassed with her. She's the only one who knows how truly weird I can get with music. She can keep a secret, so again.....bite me. She'll never tell.

So it really depends who I should be embarrassed by to answer your question. I'd like to have the balls to say, "I'm man enough to not give a crap what other people hear me listening to", but in all honestly, I've been know to grab the remote containing the mute button quicker than the door knob can rotate.

Oh Hell....You could have said anybody but him.  :duh:
I'll even admit to having Celin Dion and ABBA in my collection. But no Tiny Tim.  :nono:

All that being said, my gate only swings one way.

Hmmm your lists don't look embarrasing at all except for Abba maybe

As a 39 year old though I'm embarrassed about mine.

I like Eminem. To me, he made up for Vanilla Ice's being born.

Katy Perry, Kylie Minogue and Atomic Kitten - beautiful women, songs with hooks. Damn no matter how I try to resist the combination gets me. My daughters love them and THEY get embarrassed when I dance along with them

Fair enough. I'll get a witness to deleting the ABBA, and I'll dance to some Eminem. How's that?
Can't recall the last time I listened to Abba anyway. Thirty years ago? back when I was listen to Asia?
I turned 40 the other day, by the way, so I'm right there with ya'. But nothing will EVER make up for Vanilla Ice. Ever.  :nono:

How about jammin' to some Will Smith? Your girls would love it.

  • Without music, life would be a mistake.
Christina Aguilera, Linkin Park, Limp Biskit, all are guilty pleasures.

I should be embarrassed to admit this, but I'm not.

Don't know about Christina, but I have liked Linkin Park (first album, maybe some of second).  I've been to a LB concert.  I liked their first album.  Second had its moments.

I have to say my guilty pleasures are Elton John, George Michael's Living without Prejudice...well that is what I can think of off hand.

This might sound like fish story, but it isn't. I grew up in the Northwest, during the grunge era.  A good childhood friend of mine turned out to be a brilliant guitar player.  AFAIK, he never did turn it into a career, but he was easily the best I've ever met in person.  He had a garage band, back in HS and they were to do some recording (never heard it).

Turns out that Nirvana, had the studio before them.  This was first album, Bleach.  My friend Derek, went out about how much they sucked and would never amount to anything.  We know now.

See if I can get this thread going again!

These came on shuffle in my garage/shop system this evening.

Ike Turner - "Blues Kingpins" Heard this at my new neighbors house this past summer and loved it! So I picked it up and when anyone who knows me, hears it when it comes on, they make a comment like, what this doing in your catalog, you like this?

Marilyn Manson - "Mechanical Animals" I love this disc! Got it when it came out on a recommendation! Great production, great lyrics, and great musicianship, and his voice is like a cross between Peter Hammill and Alice Cooper, and I like them both! When he comes while people are over in my garage or yard during shuffle, I usually with go and click next unless it is late in the evening!

GoGos - I have always liked the GoGos! They have a great DVD concert filmed in Central Park.

If not, oh' well....

Kelly Clarkson.  Aside from being cuter than a bug's ear, the girl can sing.
