WTB amp for sub
« on: 31 Jan 2010, 02:29 pm »
The 300w BASH amp I was going to use to finish my HT sub died yesterday, during the install.

I am looking for an amp (plate or otherwise) viable for subwoofer use for HT.

The design is efficient enough that 100w+ will do it, but I prefer 200w+.

A power amp bridgeable and capable of a 4ohm load will do, as will any sub specific plate amp.

Budget is low, it was all spent on the cosmetics as I had assumed that my 9 year old plate amp would be viable for years to come.

$150 including shipping to Burlington, ON, L7M 4L4 in Canada.

Anyone have anything in their herd that they can part with?

Thanks guys,

Hi Mark,

Sorry to hear about the Bash amp.

I wanted to pass along some information that I read recently on DIY Audio about the Apex Sr. sub amp.

Here is a link that has some details about it.  This would allow you to have a brand new amp at your price.

Here is a link to the company website

I have not heard the amp personally, but have read some good things about it online.

The price is certainly nice.   8)

I have one of these soon to be offered for sale.  It is driving my bass shakers (8) and can easily handle 2 ohm loads (because that is what I have in my wiring config).

Drawback would be the need to adjust the volume level on turn on.

Thanks for the leads so far.

I don't think I want to mess with multiple volume control issues, my wife has to use this system, so it has to respond 100% to my Logitech 880 remote.

The apexjr amp looks good, I will have to find out what shipping and duties to Canada might add though.  He does have a 150w M&K plate amp for $100, so that might be good too.

I found locally an older Altec Lansing 1407A mono amp, but am scrambling to see if it can drive 4ohms.  For $30, I would be willing to have an extra component (but not extra volume control) in the system, because it would be tied for volume to the Pioneer receiver I am using in this HT.

Nice catch, 240w will do nicely.  The sub is ported at 23Hz, so I think I should avoid the 6db boost version!

I will call tomorrow to find out what shipping will cost to Canada.

For $192 I can get a new BASH 300w, but I am hoping to save some dough, due to the unexpected nature of the failure of the amp, and the crappy timing (just spent the $ on the granite top for the sub!).

I have also found an old pro amp that might do it, though it will have to be remote from the sub itself, so the plate amp is pref'd.

Mark, I may be changing my plate amp for something different here in the (very) near future. If memory serves, its 240 watts. The "Auto on" feature hasn't worked in three or four years, but otherwise, it's been flawless. I'm think of changing to one of the Emotiva UPA units.  :eyebrows:
I've not been in a big hurry to change for various reasons, but your situation may push me over the edge. If you're interested, let me know before you commit to anything. I'll find the exact model and specs tomorrow.
