Recycling receiver
« on: 30 Jan 2010, 07:23 pm »
I recently upgraded from a 25 year old receiver to a separate preamp and amplifier, and enjoy the improvement.  This change, however, leaves me without radio.

Question:  the old receiver has a "pre out" output bridged to "main in" for normal operation.  Can I remove the bridge and run RCA cables from the "pre out" on the receiver to an input on my preamp, and thus use the (former) receiver as a tuner?  Sorry if this is elementary, but that's the level I'm operating at!

Does the receiver have a tape input with a "Tape Out" pair associated with it?  If so, use the tape out jacks.  They are fixed line level outputs, and you will be bypassing the gain and volume control of the receiver's preamp that way, with potentially less noise and distortion.

Are they the metal jumper bars?
I am using a receiver just like that.  It gives me access to a phono and radio.  The preout does go through the receivers volume control tho.  But hey, it works  :)

Thanks for the replies.

MaxCast, yes they are the metal, horseshoe-shaped bars.

SRB, thanks, I think that's the solution I'm looking for!

That is the correct answer! Remember to leave the volume control in the lowest possible position. I also wonder if a guy shouldn't put a couple of 8 ohm, 10 watt resistors on the speaker outputs??? Better yet, the amplifier section may have some fuses on the circuit boards that may be taken out. No sense having an amplifier on when it isn't needed. I know many old Marantz receivers had fuses on the boards.

Just a thought.

That thought is a good idea.  Many conventional class A, A/B and B amplifiers consume quite a bit of power even when just idling.
