Digital output from laptop
« on: 24 Jan 2004, 04:31 am »
Since I will be using the Panasonic SA-XR45 (modded) as my main amp soon, I am intrigued by the possibility of feeding it a digital signal from my laptop which I use to listen to streaming audio (Internet radio).  Normally, my setup is a USB output which goes to a D/A converter which goes to RCAs and into my amp.

But with the Panny being so sweet with digital input sources, (so they tell me), to feed it digital from streaming audio sounds like a good idea.

Is there an easy way to do this? I believe my laptop has an optical output jack.  Can anyone who know this kind of stuff offer some info?

If your laptop has optical out and your reciever / amp has optical in your good to go...

If you are listening to lossy encoded music (streaming / MP3 / etc) would not sweat the details anyway and simply get some playback software with a good decoding engine (J Rivers Media Center / Foobar / etc) and enjoy...

If you are dealing with losslesly encoded music and chasing audio phile sound there are lots of tweaks and tricks worth working on (bit perfect output / etc)..
