Super Tower/R Crossover
« on: 30 Jan 2010, 11:57 am »
Is it possible to split the crossover being as the lower half is basiclly a larger sub anyhow. I would like to have the mids and treble on one set of binding posts and the woofers on the other. Being as the mids and the woofers all seem to be wired together has got me scratching my head.

It appears I could disconnect the 2 woofers wiring from the crossover and combine it with the treble on the lower binding post. Then use the other set of posts for the sub section. I dont use an external crossover so would I have to add another crossover for the woofers (sub) section? Jeez, I hope this makes sense.

The Super Tower /R, in it's original configuration is wired just as you mention.  The 12 and 15" woofer are wired to the bottom binding posts, everything else is wired to the top posts. The crossover network allows them to be hooked up as you mention, with the 12 and 15 wired independently, or all drivers together.  There is a toggle that enables you to switch between standard single amp and Bi-amp configurations.

It sounds like somewhere along the line yours were wired up differently/incorrectly?   I make the the wiring sound simple, in actuality the crossover network is pretty complicated (at least to my untrained eye.)

Maybe someone has a diagram they can dig up for you.

Good luck!

These were built by me as kits. However, I have checked the wiring twice as per the assembly instructions which I still have. To be sure I was wiring them correctly I went through the assembly directions line by line and made an AutoCad schematic to make it easier to trace the wiring.

The upper cup is the bass and the lower cup is tweeter.

What I'm asking is, is it possible to split the mids from the woofers?

I guess I'm confused...you said  "I would like to have the mids and treble on one set of binding posts and the woofers on the other."
And also described yours as being wired: "The upper cup is the bass and the lower cup is tweeter."  By your description, aren't they already set up that way?

The toggle switch is what actually seperates the two lower woofers from the mids and tweeters.

I know I'm probably missing something from your post, and I'm just too dense today to see it!  :)

The series filter puts the woofers and mids on one circuit and the tweeter and supertweeter on the other.

You'd have to completely reconfigure the crossover to biamp with the mids on their own.

Reading again my original post I can see how I confused you all. I think my hand got ahead of my mind. What I meant to ask is:

Split the woofers from the mids.
Leave the tweeter and supertweeter on the lower posts and add the mids to this post.
Put the woofers on the upper posts by themselves.
Something I forgot to mention was eleminate the toggle.

However, I think Big B pretty much already answered the question.

Thanks for your patience.
