John, the grille work on the Valenicias are probably what bumped the price.  I also owned a version that had a rather tacky looking plastic looking molding on the grille to give a faux Mediterranean look.  I don't recall the name, but the were the same exact components and also sounded good.

Earlier, Altec used the same 416/803/811 driver arrangement in different cabinets.  I have a pair called the Corona's that were designed for corner placement and are on solid turned walnut legs.  Unfortunately, the corner placement kind of compromises the sound a bit but I kept them because they are more rare than the later Valencia style cabinets.

Too bad you didn't use some tubes on those puppies.  They are at their best when being driven by some of the better vintage tube amps like Pilot 232, Fisher SA100, Fairchilds or the best mate, the Altec tube amps, either the 340 or 350 mono blocks.

I guess that’s enough non-VMPS discussion for today.

Sorry daniloreyes,

I heard the Bose 901's.  They sounded like crap!

Dr. Amar Bose studied acoustics at M.I.T., unfortunately he never grasped the concept

of physics.

The speakers are widely known as inaccurate, high distortion, everywhere nowhere

imaging, with no real bass.

Brian Cheney makes great speakers.

Bose corporation has great marketing ability.

Yeah yeah, exactly what I meant. You have not listened to a good set up.

Another anti-Bose guy... we all knew the thread was going to come this way. Well I do not like some of the newer Bose things, and the lower end stuff is also cheapo brand.
Is Bose a  company that lost all it was? Yeah, are they selling cheap crap, yeah. Are you mixing your feelings for Bose marketing tactics , yeah that too.
I have heard  many Bose  901 setups and guess what, many sounded like you say, really really bad, heck even my two systems sounded very bad.
Granted that even a good setup will not sound like audiophile grade speakers. (There is actually  an exception  not worth mentioning here)  But as soon as you say there is no bass... I got you.
Tell me the bass distorts the music on a high end system, but do not tell me there is no bass. With a proper setup they rumble a house, now move them out of position and yeah there is no bass. Use a low wattage system and yeah there is no bass,
They are very tricky.  The equalizer is supposed to go to the Tape Monitor.  (Which has about 460 ohms), add to that, the equalizer has electrolytic caps and most are old and dry (as  are the drivers, who might have bad surgery from a previous owner [i.e. not centered]). That is why most people have not listened to a good setup.

Granted too, and you can rejoice, are they worth $1400?, no they aren't. But do not tell me they sound like crap.  Yours sounded like crap, you went online read the forums said they were crap and sold them, then bought some accousticmass or whatever Bose called them and they sounded like crap, then you spent a lot of money in a good speaker system and oh yeah, confirmed, all the other ones were crap.

Is it like listening to a Martin Logan electrostatics pointed to the wall, then selling them and talking bad about them.
Mine sound good.

Many threads have been closed because of fanatical interchange of Bose-anti-Bose fans.

Please let’s stop here. Mine still sound good though.
My next reply will be the following “ Let’s talk about reflective speakers instead ” .

I have a pair of 901 Series 1's. I've had them since about 1983. About a year and a half ago I bought a capacitor upgrade kit for the EQ. I just installed the caps today and hooked it up. I was floored at how much better they sound. Again, as others have said.. maybe these aren't audiophile speakers but over the years they gave me great sound and lots of it. Wife and I honeymooned in New Orleans. There was a one man band there. The guy had all kinds of electronics hooked up to his electric guitar. He had two vintage 901's sitting on top of a bass bin. It sounded phenomenal.

My big system consists of a Bryston 14 SST (900 wpc) amp driving a pair of Legacy Audio Focus SE's among other speakers to complete the 7.1 surround.
The 901's are driven by a Carver M500T 250 wpc (1984 vintage)

Bottom line... my vintage 901's are cool speakers that can really take a beating... even after what... 40 years?
