I got close to the same performance without a saw. I did spend more than $2000.

That article made me a little horny.  I have a growing fascination with horns and intend to spend a significant portion of my DIY time experimenting with them and building tube amps to mate with them.

As did we. I believe that accounting in the story was in late March and does not factor in additional expenses through December ... the cost of the tweeter drivers and horns (as the RCAs only really sing from 300-8000), cross-over components, or (heaven forbid) labor and refreshments. And then, to really make the system sing—after experimenting with various bass reinforcement schemes—we constructed the Alpenhorn, a 29' long bass horn, pure exponential, with 10' wide by 6' high mouth.  This has a 15 Hz flare frequency, and should be hitting -3 dB at 20 Hz. It certainly sounds that way!
