Apple Mini vs. Imac
« on: 21 Jan 2010, 07:23 pm »
besides the cost savings of a Mini setup vs. an imac, are there any other benefits in choosing a mini over a imac to use as an itunes music server?

size could be depending on your setup.  You also might not need the monitor...if you have a LCD that you use for TV, you can use that..

Personally, I like my mini with my upgraded 4GB RAM / 120GB SSD OCZ Vertex drive.  I'm going to install JaaduVNC tonight and I won't even need a monitor.  All controlled via itouch.

just a thought.

I've wondered about this too, but I am using a Macbook Pro, and have considered switching to a MINI. But I need a monitor because the computer sometimes gets used for other things and it is so convenient to have everything in the laptop.

Here is a pic of my itouch showing itunes and Amarra via JaaduVNC.

I wanted this so I didn't have to turn my LCD on / off to start itunes / Amarra.  It works very well.

Awesome! Was the install and setup stress-free? Looks like a winner.

Very cool. Had not heard of this.  :thumb:

Does connecting a monitor to the mini defeat the overall purpose of using the mini for better audio or is it is still better than a laptop because it is connected via a cable rather than attached to the CPU like with a laptop?

Mentioned above the Mini has an external power supply, positive feature.  No, connecting a monitor doesn't increase the noise.  Plug your computer front end, what ever type (laptop, PC, Mac Mini) into a separate power conditioner than you use for the audio equipment.  It is also said that the more RAM the better, for sound quality.

I downloaded Jaadu and it's a great little app. It emulates your remote computer on an iPhone or iPod Touch i.e. you see and have control over the entire screen of your remote machine. It will not directly control an AppleTV. That said, if you were to run iTunes via Jaadu, you can set your Apple TV as your remote speaker and stream to it from your main iTunes library.

But as I understand the new Mini has an internal power supply.  Is that right?  As anyone heard how this affects audio performance?
