V-1 Grills
« on: 18 Jan 2010, 06:24 pm »
I normally don't use grills on my speakers but I do like the looks of V-1/Super-V better with the grills from the builds I have seen to date.  My question is, how are those grills being made and how are you connecting them to the speaker?  I have a couple of ideas but I have never built grills for a speaker so I though I would ask to find out how you that have built them went about it.

Thanks for any insight you can offer.

Best,
Ed

I embed 1/4" x 1/4" cylindrical neodymium magnets in baffles before veneering - one at the location of each grill corner.  Also embed one in each grill corner.  Pull the grills off for serious listening and there are no ugly plastic grill sockets showing - no sign of grill attachments.

What Hank said... and the frames are made from 1/2" MDF.

If Danny doesn't have a drawing, it would be super easy to do your own.
I ordered quite a few of the magnets from Bunting Magnetics 4 or 5 years ago.  I think they are the N35P250250:

Hit up ebay! Do a search for "rare earth magnet" and you'll get tons of hits in all sorts of sizes.

If you're looking for 1/4" x 1/4", here's one for 100 of them for $15 shipped. http://cgi.ebay.com/100-Neodymium-Magnet-1-4-x-1-4-Cylinder-Rare-Earth_W0QQitemZ120519544563QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item1c0f864ef3

Do the imbeded magnets only work well with veneer?  Or can it be done for paint too?  Cover them with wood filler?

You can cover them with anything. They will work right through it.

Yes, anything.  Just drill your hole without enlargining it, but if you do make it a bit oversize, epoxy the magnet in place.
