Children's music
« on: 15 Jan 2010, 06:42 pm »
I thought there was a thread about music for children, but I searched and cannot find it.  Anyway, here are what I think are two outstanding CDs for children, ones that I actually listen to:

You are my sunshine, Elizabeth Mitchell

Jazz for Kids:  Sing, Clap, Wiggle & Shake

http://www.amazon.com/Jazz-Kids-Sing-Wiggle-Shake/dp/B0001KAA86

The last one has a rockin' version of Old Mcdonald by Ella Fitzgerald.  Every song is great.

I love "They Might Be Giants" for kids.   They have a couple albums and their lyrics are clever, intelligent and funny.    They are sort of goofy and irreverent and I enjoy singing the songs with my kids.

I picked up this for my kids, and they loved it:

There are even a couple of tracks that use for demos on my system (eg. "Pots and Pans" by the Bacon Brothers...the whole tune is basically played using pots and pans...you get some great imaging with the percussion!).  Also love the first track, "Tantrum" by the Spin Doctors.

For real kiddy music, these are the real favorites for my kids when they were in kindergarden and younger:

My 2nd grade daughter likes Here Comes Science and says it sounds best when I play it on my 2 channel.  :thumb:

She also loved to sing along with this one a couple of years ago (5 years old).
It is nicely recorded and Lisa signed the book.  :thumb:

BTW, I played my boys all kinds of music when they were much younger and didn't limit things to "children's cd's".   Now that they are a little older (5 and 8), I continue to expose them to a very wide variety of music.  When we come across songs/artists that they like, I add it to their playlists which they can access via different systems around the house.

Wha..?  None of you had to endure songs from Yo Gabba Gabba or the Chipmunk soundtrack? Consider yourselves lucky :)  My kids get exposed to a lot of music by me but they hear some of this stuff and like it, I don't mind getting it for them.  A pretty good sounding CD is Jack Johnson's, Music From the Curious George Movie.  They also like some of the Kids Bop which I find obnoxious but I'd rather them listen to that than some of the actual lyrics of the originals.
