4B SST and Speakers
« on: 13 Jan 2010, 01:52 am »
I've had a 4B SST now for about a year, picked it up locally used because there are no dealers where I live. Naturally I knew it was too much power for the speakers I own(Mirage OM7's), hence they have blown up.
I have 3 brands of speakers locally I can purchase...Klipsch, Monitor Audio and B&W. Is there a model number(s) out of the 3 brands that can handle the power but don't cost $10000! Something in around $3000...

Thiel speakers work great with Bryston amps. Suggest the 2.4--about 4000--there are online mail order companies that sell them if you dont have a dealer..

Klipsch has the Cornwall IIIs in your price range. It's a pretty cool speaker.

B&Ws lower lines are made in China, if that bothers you.

Monitor Audio is pretty good. Which models have you heard.

B&Ws, specifically the 8xx series can handle a lot of power.  My preference is Dynaudio (as is Rob808's) as their low impedance/sensitivity lend themselves very well to the Bryston's high poer output.

Let us know whether you are looking for floorstanders or standmount speakers and it would be helpful.  Also take note that high efficiency speakers do not generally require as much power as do low efficiency loudspeakers.  My little Dyn 1.3 SEs soak up power like a sponge and beg for more! :green:

Let your ears tell you what you like and good luck in your search.  BTW, Audiogon or Canuck Audio Mart may be your best friends when you narrow your search down.

Regards,

Earl

I have the B&W 805's and sound great with my Bryston equipment.  I believe that they are around $3K a pair.  They do take a while to break in though!

I'm looking for floor speakers...heard the Monitor Audio Gold GS20's which are $4000 CND....but the store doesn't recommend them due to the Bryston power. I've heard some of the B&W 600 series but never with a Bryston. That is why are turn to you great audio veterans for recommendations! I do greatly appreciate the help...

I would live well with the two-way 2.800 US$ KLIPSCH RF-83   http://www.audioreview.com/mfr/klipsch/floorstanding-speakers/rf-83/PRD_404676_1594crx.aspx
Three 8inches woofers-mid with 100dB/Watt/M make alot of soundstage!! Whaamm Iam salivating on these beauties with a good tube amp.

Greetings,

Try to audition your final speaker selection before you buy - nothing is worse than buyers remorse after you spend large on audio equipment and do not enjoy the sound at the end of the day :o

Good luck :thumb:

Be well...

Has anyone heard the Dynaudio Focus 360's with a Bryston 4B SST? There is a one year old pair on eBay(also Audiogon) for $4000...does that seem like a fair price?

Not too bad of a price considering that list is about $7000. If you can get him down to at least $3000, then you have something.

The 4BSST should do fine with that speaker. I have 2 8inch drivers per side (in my JBL L890s) and it works wonders.

I am using the Thiel SCS4 speakers with Bryston 7B-SST. These speakers are better suited for 4B-SST's. I am actually thinking of buying a 4B-SST2 and selling the 7B-SST's. Currently the speakers sound very nice but it maybe too much power.

I liked the Usher Tiny Dancer (BE-718) a little better (about $2700/pair new) but I bought the Thiels so that I could use them as rear surround speakers with the Thiel 3.7's (a future purchase).

I saw that Thiel introduced the new model at CES 2010 that is based on the SCS4 and is a floor standing model (more base). You can also buy Thiel from online web stores such as Crutchfield but you pay MSRP.

The Usher line also now has a floor standing model based on the Tiny Dancer. I think it is called Tiny Dancer II. I woud guess it is in your price range.

Stunning speakers!  They utilize the Esotar tweeters, which are some of the finest on the planet.  Your 4B SST will drive them beautifully.  I have listened to the Focus' 360 predecessor, the Contour 3.3, and they were absolutely incredible.  Not to be a broken record here but my Dynaudio "bookshelf" speakers can absorb everything my 200-400 wpc Krell amp can throw at them.  They are non-fatiuging at any volume, extremely accurate, and powerful sounding.  I watch the sites mentioned all of the time and that is the only pair of Focus 360s that I have seen for sale.  Ever!  I can nearly guarantee that if you could hear what Dynaudios are capable of that you would buy them, and be happy for many years to come.

I would have never pictured myself owning a pair of $3500 mini-monitors but once I heard them I had to have them.  These little speakers make a joke of 100 wpc amps.  I experienced these monitors embarassing floorstanding speakers, all powered by Krell electronics, including the FPB 600 amp.  I have personaly owned B&W, Revel, Definitive Technology, Mirage, etc., etc.    IMO Dynaudio is the most accurate, expressive speaker that I have ever listened to.  I have had many audition this system and none have walked off less than flabbergasted.  Both my Paradigm 9SEs and Studio 100s were beat down by my "baby" Dyns.  If you have the funds then go for the Focus 360s.

Ask for a deal and then let all of us know what you think.

I forgot to comeback to leave some comments....LOVE THE SPEAKERS!!! I'm hearing notes I never heard before, detailed clarity. The 4BSST works fantastic.....I talked to a Dynaudio rep for North America and he said he knows Bryston products very well, so I asked him if the 14BSST would be too powerful. He comes back with... "no problem using a 14BSST with the Focus 360's, they love power". I wish I never asked that question because all I dream about now is a 14BSST !!!!
When should one stop ??? lol
