How to determine what headphones uDAC can drive?
« on: 10 Jan 2010, 09:25 pm »
Hi,

How do I figure out if the uDAC can drive my headphones without an additional amp? Headphones I want to use are Sennheiser HD 595 which normally require an amp. If they don't go well with the uDAC my other choice would be the HD 555s which have been ok connected straight to the soundcard on my laptop.

Cheers

I am using Sennheiser HD 800's without any problems.  Sounds good and plenty of power in reserve.

headphone impedance of 16 ohm to 300 ohm is ok

A follow up question, since mine is somewhat related to the original poster.

I'm planning on getting a beyerdynamic 990DTpro and i'm wondering if the uDAC can drive it well. The headphones only have 250ohm impedance, but their sensitivity are extra low at only 98dB.

Will uDAC work or do I need to use something more powerful?

You have to try it.  If uDAC can't drive it, you have no other choice (at the same price point as uDAC) either but to get the Icon HDP.

I am using my uDac to drive Beyer DT990 (600 ohm) version. It works fairly well, but I am looking at getting a desktop amp to go between the uDac and the headphones.
