It seems that it takes months to get the re-tip from SS. That is kind of a ..... Turn off
Slow, are kidding 8 months for my Technics MC 310
8 months? Must be bad timing. They told me they're now catching up and the backlog is getting smaller. The first cart I sent there last yr, took 3 months. That was a Monster Genesis 1000 w/boron cantilever. It got their best stylus and sounds good. The orig stylus was a micro ridge. I spoke to Peter on the phone, and he recommended using a test record for azimuth adj. I don't have a test record - I do this by ear. When the azimuth is slightly off it will usually sound fuzzy in 1 ch and the treble is unbalanced. It can be a little tricky, as it sometimes does the opposite of what you'd guess. Anyway, it turns out that the azimuth looked perfect.I just got back a Denon DL-304. The wait was 2 months. The 304 now has a ruby cantilever and fine line. It looks gorgeous - I'll let you know.
I guess better late than never fits this situation. Especially with the high level of quality Peter at SS is renowned for. I miss my Dynavector evertime I spin an album! And I curse my housekeeper who broke it (and my Zu DL103), called me a liar, then quit. The B@#$%!
Yes, you definitely have to call. Cartridges with exotic cantilevers have the stylus only, replaced. It costs more - $450. I understand Peter does that, and the best stylus work himself. Apparently he has trained someone to help with the less expensive work. My DL-304 only got level 2 (fine line) stylus and seems to be DOA. It was given to me by someone who broke off the cantilever. I called, and Peter apologized and said it will be fixed as soon as they get it back. It might be a bit of a hassle, but it's good to deal with someone who's honest and stands behind their work.
So I can't get the 17d3 rebuilt so what is the cost of a re tip?
