Shout out for the Canon G11

I paged through several posts and did not see anything on the Canon G11. After much research, I picked one up a few weeks ago. One of the selling points was the low light capabilities with no flash. Although I am still learning all the great features of this camera, I recently went to Atlantic City for a vacation and shot almost exclusively with no flash or tripod.

Here is the Boardwalk at 10pm from the doors of Caesar's Pier.

This is a shot from the Wildlife Refuge in Galloway, which is the back bay of AC. I shot this Blue Heron with full zoom from about 30 yards away in 20 degree temps with gusting winds. It was not until I got home did I realize the resolution was 2 steps from the best.

I also recently bought a G11 as a backup to my EOS 1Ds MkII, as I needed something lighter and less conspicuous. Thus far, I'm pretty pleased with it. Like you, it's low light, low noise capabilities were a major positive for me. I'm a little unhappy with the placement of the control pads on the back, I'm always bumping them inadvertently. Shutter lag still bothers me compared to a good dslr, but it's the nature of the beast. It does have remarkably good image quality for the price though. I've found the pivoting lcd screen to be quite useful for composing shots when you need to get a higher vantage point than eye level. All in all, it's one of the leading cameras in it's category. However, I'd still consider the Olympus Pen EP-2 as well (even though it's twice the price.)

That is good to hear that you guys like the G11. My trusty G1 no longer works on battery and I have been holding off buying another camera until the flippy screen was re-introduced, I don't know why all cameras don't have the pivoting screen because they are so darn useful.

I like the G11.  However, it seems bulkier than the G10.

That is odd since they claim the only thing that really changed was the flip screen and reduction of pixels.

I did just buy the nice little leather case that fits both 10 and 11 so if it is any bigger, it can't be by much.

This was my first upgrade since a 3.2MP Olympus Stylus all weather camera so all the negative things you brought up and those I read in reviews are not too important to me since the G11 is light years better than what I am used to.

The flip screen was also a good selling point since you can close it and protect it. The video is very good quality for non-hd as well as the recorded voices sounding accurate.

The controls are a bit tight and that was my main concern after first holding the camera but I am slowly getting used to them and my hand positioning. The playback options are good with many choices. The scroll wheel is really good as opposed to pushing the button over and over.

I need to learn how to use all the manual settings and am currently looking for a good book since the manual only tells you that you can change settings but never when or why.

Come on, don't wimp out over a few ounces weight in your palm.  You need that weight to stabilize the image.  aa

I just found a comparison. The G11 is 5 grams heavier and .1inches bigger in one direction.

Having used the G9 and 10 extensively, the advantage to the G11 is its high ISO performance.  Finally, a point and shoot that can work at ISO 1600!

My G9 and 10 get pretty grainy above 400, but the G11 is a huge improvement.

Interestingly, though I always shoot in RAW, Canon's processing is better at high ISO.  At 800-3200 the pics are much less noisy, shooting JPEG and letting the camera doing the processing.

Very impressive!

And as for stabilizing the image, the fold out viewscreen makes it a lot easier to balance the camera...  Nice touch.

Just thought of this - If Canon is as good as Panasonic in support, there should be a tel. #, 800 # I hope, you can actually call, and they at the other end actually can take/talk you through, with your camera in your hand.  Sometimes, it's pretty good.  The 800 # is usually at the very end of the manual.

Good luck, and happy new year!
