apple dvd player downmix to stereo?
« on: 23 Dec 2009, 06:49 pm »
I've tried running a few searches and didn't find an answer to my question.  I'm considering moving my multichannel/HT setup to a 2-channel configuration and would like to know if, while watching movies and with the dolby compression disabled, does the apple dvd player application drop the LFE channel/information when downmixing to 2-channel/stereo?  I've got a capable set of mains and a pair of very capable subs and would rather not lose the LFE channel data if I can avoid it.  I use my mac mini as my only source and would like to eliminate my HT processor from the chain, replaced by a good 2-channel DAC fed digitally from the mini.

Thanks for the help!

I believe it downmixes the entire 5.1 into 2.0 stereo.  I know the apple TV does.

Thanks for the reply!  Since posting this, I've got a pair of speakers and the amp moved into the new room, and I took delivery of a shiny new Tranquility DAC.  I've still got to get some cables and figure out how to reconfigure my data runs into the room, but once done, I'll see how it goes. :)

Cheers!
