Soundcoat has the color and consistency of oatmeal.  It quiets panel vibration above 200Hz by about 10 dB.

Brian: The reason I asked is because I pulled out a 10" woofer from one of my ST/R SE's yesterday and it looks to be bare MDF in there. Pulled a few pieces of fiberglass out and it doesn't appear to be treated at least in that cavity.  Will pull a woofer from the other side and see what it looks like.

Looks like neither of my speakers has any soundcoat in them.  Looked up above and below and there's nothing but bare MDF.  Seems that it would be obvious to anybody assembling these speakers and why would they assemble them without the soundcoat?

Soundcoat dries about the same color as MDF.  Look for little bits of it as spatter around the input terminals and on the braces.  If you ordered it you got it.  Virtually all floorstanders we make now are soundcoated at the factory.

Thanks Brian, there's indeed some rough splatter.  You must have smoother oatmeal than we get here in Oregon.  It appears that this is a treatment that actually soaks into the wood as it appears to be bare MDF.  Is this correct. I believe the ST/R SE's are advertised that the soundcoat is standard.

Curiosity question: how does SoundCoat compare to Dynamat Xtreme? When I was ordering my 626R, I estimated that the cost of lining my speakers with DX would have been similar to the SC option.

We use Dynamat Extreme on woofer baskets.  It doesn't stick very well to MDF.  Should work about the same.

I once read that some Plasti Clay would work to help dampen baskets and will also stick to the wood. Does anybody know anything about this?
