Going percentage off at Audiogon?
« on: 21 Dec 2009, 07:30 pm »
Well, I want to sell a brand new, never used piece of gear that originally cost $900.  I was thinking of selling it for $600.  However, I look here:

http://cgi.audiogon.com/cgi-bin/srch_fs.pl?searchstring=dodd&B1=go

And see highly regarded Dodd battery preamps, one about a year old, going for 1,600 for what I believe was an original price of $3,300.  That's a whopping 48 percent of the original price for something that's basically new.

Is that the going rate?  Should I be charging $450 or less for equipment that cost $900 less than a year ago and has never been used?

You should charge whatever you want.

Bob,

Resale prices vary based upon whatever you are selling.  I am guessing you can't find any used prices for your particular item.  If it is rarely seen on Audiogon it may bring a higher price.

Two suggestions.  1--Start high and see what offers you get. Ignore the knee-jerk lowballers who make immediate offers at 50% off or more.

2.  Offer the item for sale here.  I have had better luck selling on Audio Circle than I have had on Audiogon.

My observation is that things are slow to sell at Christmas and in January/February  when the credit card bills come due for holiday spending.

Good luck.

you can't use a completely different item to judge your anticipated sale/listing price. at most, you should look for the same piece of gear you're trying to sell to see what other's are listing it for. but really, decal had it right. list it for what you want. if a week or two goes by without any interest, then you can always lower the price. honestly, i think right now is a bad time to sell with the holidays and all. everybody is likely strapped for cash after buying xmas presents and travelling. i say try to hold out until the end of  january or even into february before listing.

Bob,

Probably not what you want to hear, but you charge what you think the market will support.

You will know right away whether you are priced too high or low.

In order to help figure out a good starting price, here are a few things to think about:

1.  What is the demand for my product?
2.  How well known or recognized is my product?
3.  What would it cost to buy new today?  Doesn't matter that it listed for "x" 6 months ago if it lists for 1/2 of "x" today.
4.  Are there other examples of my product already on Audiogon?  How long have they been available?
5.  How quickly do you want/need to sell the item?

When all else fails, you can ask for people's opinions (either publicly or privately) before listing the item.

Best of luck with your sale.

Dodd is a small shop that is not as well known as say Krell.  That hurts resale.  Hot items or items of the month always sell better but then crash when the used market gets saturated.

Thanks for the opinions.  I'm going to try to sell some Ack Dacks, a Nuforce amplifier (single), a buffer, a CIA PLC-1 (the latter is the $900 item):

PLC•1 MKII Remote Passive, at http://www.ciaudio.com/

I've never used it, but have taken it out of the box.  My room is still under construction.

I realize this is the holidays and there could be low volume, but that's a benefit to me.  I work long hours and have a toddler and am reconstructing my family room.  I have at most 30 minutes a night to sift through responses.  The previous times I've tried to sell stuff, it's been a horrid experience because I can't keep up with the email volume.  I prefer to sell when there are few buyers.

Thanks for the help!
