Cutting Bugle battery holders off
« on: 19 Dec 2009, 04:54 am »
Can anyone point me in the right direction as to how I might cut the battery holders off of my Bugle?  I'm building a new preamp.  The bugle will now run off the preamp's power supply.  I'm using a nice oak box, unfortunately the box is slightly undersized.  So I guess my two questions are after I cut off the wings where should I apply the +15v and -15v;  also where can I reconnect the two electrolytic caps that are now sitting right in front of the batteries.  I hope this hasn't been covered else where, I searched the forum and found mention of successful operations on bugles, but no explanations of how the pieces were put back together.
Thanks so much.
Joe

In theory I was planning to unsolder my battery holders.  You could probably just heat the old solders with an iron will applying light pressure to the battery holder, it would probably pop off nice and easy.  I'd probably get out my desolder pump and take away some of the old solder (make removing the battery holders look cleaner) and assume the battery holder would just fall off.

Thanks for the reply, though I feel pretty confident in my ability to unsolder the battery holders.  I was more interested in advice on taking my dremel tool with a cut off blade on it and cutting the board down to a smaller size (by cutting off the areas where the batteries now reside) so that it would fit better in my new preamp box.
thanks

Hack saw works fine.  You can connect power into where the switch would mount.

Thanks Jim,
two more questions... Where does the +15 go on the switch and where does the -15 go(I'm assuming they both go on the "On" side of the switch with the +15 on the outside edge and the -15 goes on the inside of the switch, but some confirmation would make me feel better)? Also what is best to do with the two small electrolytic caps?  Do they need to be reattached somewhere?
thanks

Track it backwards using an ohm meter.  Pin 8 on opamp is positive, pin 4 negative.  Ohm these pins to the switch.  Then you know you get it right.
