Universal Player(s) and switching between them
« on: 18 Jan 2004, 12:55 am »
Does anyone know of a switching device that would allow me to plug in both a multichannel DVD-Audio player and a multichannel SACD player (analog inputs) and then choose which set of signals I send to my pre-pro, which has only a single set of mutichannel analog inputs?

You need a MC input switch.  I don't know who makes a good one.  I remember I think I saw one on audiogon once.  Wasn't cheap.  I think I would make my own using a multi throw switch.  If you aren't sure how you would do that then you might ask on avsforum.com for an off the shelf product.

By reputation, I think this is a good unit: http://www.zektor.com/mas3/index.htm

Haven't actually tried it myself, though.

Sony has a discontinued pre that sells used for under $500 (that was the new price I beleive) that was supposed to be perfect for that solution and was rated as  stereophile class A.

If you wanted to go cheap, go down to radio shack and get a couple of AV  switches.  These are the red/white/yellow A/B switches.  Since each has 2 channels of 3 switches, you need two.  Very slick, very cheap.  Don't know how well they pass the audio though.

I can't recall the model #, but that Sony pre is getting really hard to find, I think.  I haven't seen one for sale in quite awhile.  Onecall.com used to carry it...

Sony TA-P9000ES is the model.

Two 5.1 analog inputs, 5.1 and 2 ch bypass, full remote control.

When first released they were the only game in town and everyone was after one, especially Sony TA-E9000ES preamp users. Now with other MC analog preamps available the Sonys aren't that hard to find.

There's one on Audiogon now

Thanks folks. Lots of good suggestions. I particularly like the "Switchbox" option as it won't break the bank.
