Itunes Album Art
« on: 11 Dec 2009, 05:09 am »
I notice that Itunes doesn't pick up some album art that other programs do.  Is there a way to manually add in the album art if needed?  I have my first Mac, a Mini and I am just learning about them now.

iTunes only picks up art for albums/artists it carries in its own iTunes store.  For all others, find them via Amazon, etc (several apps to find art) and then drag-n-drop onto the "get info" section of the Album (highlight all songs and right click for "get info" tabs).

Thank you.  I was able to find and import the art missing for the AIFF files, but this process doesn't seem to work for CDs brought in as wav files.  Is there a way around this?

You only need to select one song in an album

iTunes itself has never supported album art for .wav files. it's been a while dealing with .wavs for me, but my workaround was to convert the .wav to .aiff (change your import setting to AIFF format-with selected album or song,  menu: advanced> Create AIFF version) I had very few wav files. By now there may be a third party app to do some magic tweak to the wav. not sure.

Not really.  When you tell iTunes to 'Get Album Artwork', it will import the artwork for .wav files if it is found in the online Gracenote Internet database.  This data is then stored in your local iTunes database, not in the file itself.  (The other file formats store the artwork and tags in each file's header.)

However iTunes has not provided a method for storing .wav file album artwork in the local iTunes database if it is not found on the Gracenote Internet database.

A (weak) work-around I use is to make a low-bitrate .mp3 duplicate copy of the first song of the album, then drag the artwork into that selected song's artwork viewer.  The artwork will only appear in the artwork viewer for just that one song, but it will appear as artwork in the Cover Flow view for all songs in that album.  I then uncheck the duplicate .mp3 copy of that first song so that it will not play.

I used to do that, but the remote app then only shows artwork when THAT song appears.  ??

Obviously I'm only using the iTunes computer interface and haven't progressed to the next stage of remote control with the iPod Touch, iPhone, etc.  Like I said, rather "weak".

Which file format to use is always a quandry for those that like the iTunes interface best.  I think that FLAC with embedded metadata is compatible with most other media players, but of course, iTunes doesn't support it and probably never will.

I could convert to AIFF, but I don't believe that it's metadata is as universally supported as FLAC in other media players.  Is that correct?

Thanks once again.  For imported .wav file CDs previously made on my PC I just needed to convert one song to AIFF to allow the attachment of album art.  I can even delete that file afterwords and the cover art remains for each .wav song from that CD when it plays.

Interesting.  Perhaps this works differently on the PC than it does on the Mac.  I made an .AIFF copy, and it worked the same way as my .MP3 copy - The artwork shows up in Cover Flow view for any song selected from that album, but only for that particular song in song view (or on the remote app view).

When I delete the .AIFF (or .MP3) file, I have no artwork anywhere.

I am using a new Mac Mini, but I may have missed something, but so far the art is remaining.
