Dead Stratos?
« on: 16 Jan 2004, 06:50 pm »
I just got my big beautiful Stratos on Tuesday.  Plugged it in and had an ungodly buzzzzzzzzzzzz.  Tried switching around everything I could, but the buzz wouldn't go away.  Turns out all I needed was a "cheater" plug on the power cord.  No more buzz.  Yeah!  :)

So I get everything hooked back up, and throw in a CD, and the right channel is dead.  :(

I've switched the cables, and speakers to make sure it is indeed the stratos that has the problem, and alas, it is.  I spoke to Klaus and he said with complete confidence that I blew a fuse.

I cracked open the case, and removed the fuses.  None of them look blown.  I intended to stop and get some new fuses at lunch today, but a co-worker just tested the fuses I took out, and indeed, all four are fine.

Any other ideas?  Shipping back this beast is going to be pricey...not to mention heart breaking.

Geez, without knowing the whole story, I would think that return shipping on a DOA amp wouldn't be your responsibility.

You have a ground loop that is causing your "buzz"

Using the cheater plug is not a safe solution!  Klaus normally does not recommend this as it can cause you to be electocuted under certain situations.  You now have no grounding on that amp.

Find the cause of your ground loop and fix that for a safe listening experience.

Klaus himself told me to use the cheater plug.  I read in the manual that he STRONGLY said not to, but he said go ahead.  ???

The buzz isn't my issue now.  I need to figure out why my right channel is dead.  :(

I agree with Mr. Marbles, that's the most usual "malfunction" from this amps.

Sometimes it happens when conecting to a power strip that also has protection for antena/cable.

The other strange thing happened to me when having a DVD I used the analog audio output as a source and connected it to the pre and the pre to the amps, well a high pitch buzz then appeared, after connecting and disconecting many cables I found that plugging also the video output of the DVD to the TV input then the buzz appeared.

Again, the buzz is gone.  That's not my issue.

Can a fuse test OK, and in reality be dead?  I'd think not, but I'm at a loss for ideas.

Klaus is taking care of me.  I should be enjoying the sweet sound of my Stratos by early next week.

Thank you Klaus!

Hello over here spiffnme!

Yep, that's Klaus!  He'll take good care of you!

Silver faceplate...just like mine.  They look great on their own stands, and they match well with my other silver components.

Spiffnme,

If the are two things that separate Odyssey Audio from the rest, they're the bang for the buck the components provide AND the unmatched customer support and service from Klaus.  No fear here.  He'll get you up and running just as others like kmmd have posted.
