SOUND VALVES VTP-101 TUBE PREAMP WITH PHONO
Nice condition tube preamp with phono stage. The only items to note are a slight rub of the silkscreening on the "PWR" button, a slight mar on the "Input" knob, and a couple of spots on the top where someone had once stacked another component. None are significant, and this would definitely be a "7" on the Audiogon scale.
Comes with a manual, but no other accessories.
From what little I know about this component, it was one of the early "budget" tube preamps, but has always been considered to perform WELL above its minimal price. Not really sure what price to put on this (don't see many for sale), but $329 seems quite reasonable for the quality.
This unit was serviced in early 2008 by a very good tube tech (Joe C Service, New Britain, PA), and he was impressed by the construction and quality of original parts. I have used this unit consistently in a second system since that time, and have never had any operational or sound quality issues with it (sound has always been clean and full).
The main reason for selling is that I really need something with a remote control, and have picked up a few other things to try.
I would note that I have never used the phono stage. If for some reason that is DOA, I will refund the purchase price (upon return of the unit to me in the same condition as shipped), or potentially contribute to a check up and repair.
The unit uses 3 12AX7 in the line stage and 3 12AX7 in the phono stage. There is nothing fancy in there at the moment. I will test the tubes that are currently installed (on my Weston 981 III) and, if any of them test marginally, I will replace the marginal ones with something comparable.
