New 1801-TL design in curly English maple
« on: 7 Dec 2009, 08:13 pm »
Scott contacted us asking if we could build floor-standing cabinets for his existing pair of stand-mounted Ellis 1801's.  We had just finished launching our new HT1-TL's about that time and it occurred to me that since both speakers used the same W18, the same TL cabinet could work for 1801's as well.  So I suggested that we build TL cabinets rather than normal floor standing 1801 cabinets.  He agreed.

Then I got to thinking that others may want this same speaker.  The problem is, Dave Ellis is in the process of developing a new kit with a different driver.  So I asked Dave how he would feel about offering 1801b kits to those wanting this new speaker design.  Dave said "go for it!"  But rather than stocking separate kits, he simply turned over the schematics so we could order the parts ourselves.  Can't beat that!

Here are some pictures of the first pair of 1801-TL's (more currently in progress for other customers)...

And a close-up of the front baffle...

So, another model is born!

Happy listening Scott!

Jim:

Is the pricing for the 1801-TL the same as the HT1-TL?

Nice speakers, BTW.

No, it will be lower.  Probably around $2695 per pair.

And, merely for my own edification, what was the price of the TL cabinet? (I take it you just transplanted the drivers etc from his bookshelf cabinets to the new ones.)

That all depends on the veneer, the baffle style, etc.  These were about $1800 for the pair and included Cardas binding posts, deluxe spikes, nameplates, etc.

The results are very good with a consdierable increase in bass extension and a smoother, more relaxed midrange.  I was very happy with the way these turned out.
