I received most of my CD shipment from bigcd.com yesterday, including the two Flaming Lips CDs, YBTPR and "Soft Bulletin". I listened to both last night, and find the music intriguing, if not easily catagorizable (to me a good thing).
I noticed some distortion in the drum tracks on "Soft Bulletin". I haven't read the liner notes yet, but it sounds to me like analog magnetic tape overload. Does anyone else with this CD hear this too?
I know there are digital processors (plug-ins) designed to simulate all kinds of analog gear distortions, so I wonder if this is a digital recording where these plug-ins are liberally applied, or an analog recording (at least in part), where the distortion is either deliberate or accidental.
