RUSH
is the granddaddy of prog rock, along with YES, and ELP.  They represent lyrical content and musical complexity that is well above standard rock fare.
There is a new breed out there, and prog rock is alive and well.  Some are fueled by drummers with otherworldly talent a' la Neil Peart  of RUSH.

Dream  Theater/ Mike Portnoy:
the latest offereing "train of thought is *VERY*  good.  Mike has been accused of being Peart like.  I say he is inventive, and uses his kit in a more melodic fashion, and does a lot of very adroit double kick work. Vocals and lyrical style are like Rush, but a half octave lower.

Transatlantic:
Mike's alter ego band

Liquid Tension experiment  1 and 2: Mike Portnoy
This instrumental  stuff is high energy, creative and opens up with jackhammer speed double kick work.  Highest recommendation for prog rock/drummer fans.

Planet X:  Virgil Donati  the "thunder from down under"
This cat has Ferrari V-8 speed on the double kick.  It's scary fast!   :o Universe and moonbabies are great stuff

Spocks beard:
A smaller drumkit is used, and slightly less complex, but intruging work here.  These guys are chameleon like!  They can sound like YES, Rush, DT and original.

Merillion:  I understand they are really good, I am waiting for my cee dee's to arrive

Marco Minnemann:
German uber drummer.  This guy can wail on some notes...you can hear him at www.moderndrummer.com in the mp3 section or his web site.

Magma / Christian Vander: The music is exceptional, not everyone's cup of tea, though

Morgan Ågren / Mats & Morgan Band: Playful; taking it to the limits

Bill Bruford / King Crimson: Legendary stuff...

Terry Bozzio / Zappa, Vai et al: Invention!

Hmmm...I got a Spock's Beard CD-R as a freebie w/my last Half.com order, but I'd kinda forgotten it.  I'll give it a listen!

I haven't heard the newest Dream Theater, but I'm a fan so I'll have to check it out, too.

BTW, did you hear Alex Lifeson, Rush's guitarist, was arrested for assaulting a sheriffs deputy?  I haven't heard much since his arrest- I wonder how that bodes for Rush?

DENNIS CHAMBERS  is the drummer, he is *AWESOME* :o .  I am not sure if UMSR  is Fusion or prog rock, but it's cool.

I almost forgot:

Fates Warning is prog rock

Don't forget Terry Bozzio. The Bozzio Levin ( ) Stephens albums are amazing!

Oh yeah, and to make sure Bruford gets his dues, his work with the mid-70's Crimson, especially Larks Tongues In Aspic, is at the top of my list. The percusionist on LTIA, Jamie Muir, was a genius, and he and Bruford are amazing together. Too bad that phase of the band didn't last longer.

Don't forget the mashing of Keith Moon or John Bonham.
Neil Peart is one of the best out there.
Mike Portnoy is fast becoming a reference.
Terry Bozzio was great with Zappa and UK.
Carl Palmer is one of my favorites from yesteryear.
Phil Collins is pretty good with Genesis.
Chester Thompson also with Genesis.
Dave Matthews Band can't remember his name but keeps the rythm.

I always thought that Alan White sounded very....'melodious,' very intricate, thoughtful and musical drummer; Carl Palmer could sound like two drummers, master of syncopation with Emerson's over-the-top keyboards. Neil Peart, a technical master of the instrument, bar none. Rush is a Canadian treasure, and still viable and hugely popular.Met Peart in my mother in law's Deli north of Toronto, a regular customer there, and real regular guy. Bill Bruford in the mid eighties industrial King Crimson: absolutely lethal; One MONDO COMBO. Had to see them the next night.

Andromeda;  Thomas Lejon;  Swedish prog band.  11=1 is their newest amazing album

Pain of Salvation; Johan Langell;  Great band, great drummer;  This Swedish band has opened for Dream Theater and headlined many Prog Festivals;

The Flower Kings;  Jamie Salazar;  Another Swedish Prog band that is legandary.  They have a new drummer however, and most people think he is great as well.

Simon Phillips;  His work in Los Lobotomy's/ Toto/ his own band, and many projects.  Great

Dave Weckl;  Fusion, but close to prog, maybe.

Deep Purple was the original Heavy Metal Band.  They were certainly progressive for their time.  Ian Paice has always been a favourite drummer of mine.

He's fast, inventive, and always attentive to the requirements of the tune.  He knows when to lead the band, when to sit in the pocket and groove, and his stuff has always been tasteful, showing his talents without showing off.
