Dust cover on the cheap??
« on: 2 Dec 2009, 10:55 pm »
I have a VPI Scoutmaster, but don't have the funds available for an acrylic dustcover just yet. Therefore, I have to wipe off the platter before playing any records. In the interim, would it be a decent solution to buy a dime store throwaway record to keep on the platter when not in use? Just a thought.

They used to make soft vinyl covers for printer that would work well on turntables, but the printers are so small nowaday, I am not sure if such covers are still being made.

Companies who are charging extra for dustcover = highway robbery

I have an acrylic disc that can be used as a dust cover over your platter. When your done with that, you can use it to set your anti-skating.

PM me if interested.

Would a turntable cover from a mass market 70's-80's turntable work or would it be too small? If it would work I would check out the local thrift store.

I use one of those inexpensive plastic/soft vinyl printer covers (@$5-10 on e-bay or Staples), but you have to make sure that you have a stylus guard so you don't inadvertantly catch it and bend the cantilever. If your cartridge doesn't have a dedicated guard I've found a cut down paper towel center (the cardboard tube) make a nice guard. It isn't pretty but it works.

Alternately you could just put an old scratched record on the platter when not in use, but that doesn'c cover the wholt table, only the platter.

good luck,
Bob

That's exactly what I was going to suggest from reading the heading. A bandana will work in a pinch too.

My cartridge has a guard which I replace after every use so I really only need to cover the platter. Guess I'll hit up the Goodwill on the way home and buy some cheap record to "protect" the platter. I'm not so worried about dust on the plinth at this point so I may hold off on the custom Gingko-esque acrylic covers.

Made with the aid of a bic lighter... keeps the platter clean, doesn't help much else.

I use the official dustcover as a parts tray.

i found a really thick columbia graphophone 78 at the goodwill today for .99. not sure exactly how old it is, but the most recent date on the label is nov 30, 1909 so it appears i may have a 100 year old dust cover.

Your 100 year old cover would only cover the platter, the rest of the turntable will still get dusty, but of course, it'll then match your 100 year year old cover perfectly, and your turntable will look like 100 year old. What a brillient idea.

i can dust the plinth every couple of weeks. without the 78, i have to dust the platter every time i play a record. so for .99 i don't have the headache of dusting the platter every time or running the risk of forgetting to dust the platter and pressing dust into my vinyl. seems like fair compromise to me.

I must confess that I use old bath towels (hand towels) to cover all of my turntables, even the ones with dust covers. It keeps them nice and clean and then we throw them into the wash machine every once in a while. My ARMod doesn't have a cover, so the towel goes directly on top of the platter and tonearm. The AT440MLa cartridge I have has a flip down stylus guard and I put that down when I cover up, to prevent damage. I also lock down the Rega RB300 tonearm.

I have seen a round one like this somewhere. Actually, Opus 104 on the AA Vinyl Board had one on a VPI scout he was selling.

This is the round one I was thinking of. Looks like it would fit other tables.
