Hi Fi Audio term on tubes amps?
« on: 2 Dec 2009, 02:36 am »
Ok, I love tube audio sound however I am not expert on the topic.  I keep hearing about Triode, Class A, Class B and Class AB.  Now can someone really explain all these terms and what exactly it relates to in regards to how music is played on the equipment, whats better, worse etc?

I hope I dont get ridiculed for asking about these terms

I found this guide that Sonic Frontiers/Anthem created did a pretty good job of explaining tubes without getting super technical - maybe it will help, it covers most of your specific questions.

Here's another great link for info. Tubes are a many wonderous and diverse means to great sound. Inside the tubeophile realm there are many advocates for a multitude of topologies. People who are still thinking in terms of "Tubes or Solid State" are often surprised to find that while tubeophiles agree the answer is a resounding "TUBES, STUPID!!!" there is very little agreement beyond that. And, as I myself am currently experiencing, ones mind can be easily changed when they hear something they like. :)

Here's a couple other links for your viewing pleasure:

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tube_sound

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Electronic_amplifier#Classification_of_amplifier_stages_and_systems

The first one is good to explain some good basics on tube amps, the second is a good reference for types of classes of amps, A, D, T etc.
