Burning CDs using FLAC
« on: 1 Dec 2009, 05:42 pm »
I've lost or scratched multiple CDs, and I'm also in a home theater reconstruction project where my CDs are bundled somewhere in the garage and not easily accessible.  We have two cars that do not accept iPod input, so I need to use CDs there.  I've been listening to the same 5 CDs for the last month, and it's killing me!

I have all my music ripped to FLAC files.

How do I burn CDs from FLAC files?

Essentially two options:

1) Obtain a burning program that decodes FLAC files.  I use Ashampoo Burning Studio, which is payware (about 30 bucks).  It's a nice program and fully supports FLAC.  Foobar 2000 (freeware) also supports FLAC, although I think you need to find an add-in to burn via FB.  Do a little Googling, FLAC is becoming pretty widespread.

2) Decode the files yourself for burning with non-FLAC-supporting burning programs (like Windows Media Player or others).  The FLAC front-end program lets you convert FLAC files back to WAV, with the option to keep the FLAC source file or delete it after conversion.  You can always convert a WAV back to FLAC and vice-versa.  That's one of the primary advantages of it.

Hope that helps!

Free version of dbPowerAmp can convert them to WAV, then use your burn program.

Thank you both very much.  I may go the dbPowerAmp route, as I was thinking of this to rip to FLAC also (I currently use EAC).

Although I'm not a big fan of the program, the free version of Winamp will also burn to FLAC.  I've used it before in a pinch on other people's computers when I needed something quick to install and free to use.

Not free, but Nero does.

Media monkey, which is free, does it with no strings attached.  You just select the burn for cd players and away it goes.  The free version only burns at 2x but that is ok by me.  I use this to burn cds for friends or my wife, works great never had a problem.

Ditto Media Monkey.
I'm "all about" the FLAC. But when it comes time to burn one for the car (or a boom box), I'll pop a disc in the drive and open up the Monkey.
Great results.

MediaJukebox is free and will do it no problem without any restrictions that I know of. It's been quite a while since I did it, but I seem to recall burning directly from EAC in the past...

Hmmm....MediaMonkey or dbPowerAmp?  I need something to rip with some degree of accuracy FLAC (or I could just keep using EAC), but I also need to adjust my tags, which I think MediaMonkey does but dbPowerAmp does not.  I'll have to do more research.

Does media monkey rip in FLAC?  I use EAC to rip and MM for computer playback.

JRIVER Media center burns CDs from FLACs--converts the file format on the fly.  It does cost $$$.  It also works for ripping in secure mode.  Doesn't seem as accurate as db poweramp (which I plan to try one of these days when I have some spare energy).

I've been using MediaMonkey to do exactly what your asking about and it works great.  Burn directly from my flac files to CD.  The paid version buys you a few more functions plus increases the speed of the burn but you get all you need in the free version.  MediaMonkey is also a great tool for tagging and obtaining album art.
