Well, my other reply was erased but went something like this:

Wow, that set of doors is stunning.  I know whom to call once I get a better house!

Thanks, my doors even make average houses look better too.

That's true, but we've spent a ton on a raised ranch that we don't plan on living in for much longer (too small if we add another child).  If I had a house I planned on staying in longer, I'd consider new doors.

Automatic door bottoms are nice, but if you have carpet they will not work. You will need a flat threshold for them to seal to or the carpet will pull the rubber out of  the door bottom. Cheap automatic door bttm's are noisey and don't last very long and good ones are too expensive. Try to use a low profile threshold with raised rubber seal if possible.  Air tight is more crucial than the door. Of course solid doors are better than hollow.

Also if you can have two doors in the same opening, One swinging in and one swinging out to give you a good dead air space. it will work great. Dead air is one of the best sound proofers you can get. Just use one of them until you are ready to turn it up.

I have been a certified sound door installer for 20 yrs. And this is your cheapest route. I use a pair of 1' 6" closet doors with an overlapping astragal and roller latches on the inside of my listening and a standard solid door with a standard low profile threshold on the outside leaf. Stick on smoke seal is also a good seal. Most commercial grade door suppliers carry it in stock and it's cheap.

PM me if you need manufacturers and part #'s

Matt

I've been a custom and commercial door install for 30 yrs. and i have to say i really like the design of your doors. I meant to see if you were going to RMAF. We could have talked door geek stuff.
Maybe next year.

Hey Matt,

I only had one day to see everything at the last RMAF, hoping to make the next one and spend some time at the bar with the boys Friday night.

I use weatherstripping from Resource Conservation Technology on all my custom doors, their adjustable door bottom is the only sweep I have used for years along with the WS15 silicone offset flipperseal. They have a couple of catalogs you can download, some of their weatherstripping and energy efficient seals look like they would work for sound proofing too.

Rob - thanks!

I think RCT advertises in Fine Homebuilding.

Matt, thanks for the offer.  Unfortunately, the crappy room I have will only support a single door due to this door's relationship to another door just outside the door.  That is, unless I want to modify the door frame, which at this point, I don't.  The room and house has been a money sink (just got done paying to have a new header and sliding glass door installed because they used an undersized header that caused the house to sag), and my wife is freaking out about how long this project is taking.  I need to get wires run, get everything inspected, and get the drywall up before she divorces me.
