If you like their design aesthetic, Billy Bags racks are hard to beat. If you keep an eye on the "Blowouts" section on their website, great deals for significant discounts can be had. I picked mine up for a 50% discount and had it via truck freight within a week or so. Their racks are shipped on a pallet and packed with the best professionalism of any product I've ever bought.

Is there actually any concrete evidence (at least for non turntable use) that heavy and expensive racks (+/- spikes and vibration control), make any significant audible difference?  Aside from the "eye-candy" effect, I don't quite get it.  My system is essentially comprised of non-moving parts (95% of my listening via my Squeezebox into a Benchmark DAC).  I am currently using an inexpensive StudioTech HF-4 modular rack (with casters on carpet), and even when cranking out thunderous bass tracks, there is virtually no vibration/resonance.  To me, if anything, it makes more sense to add isolation feet, or perhaps a heavy weight on top, for any components that appear to resonate.  Yet, I see so many audiophiles investing significant $$ on high-end racks, even when they don't have an analog setup!

Sleepysurf, I'd imagine it's like most things in hi-end audio, there's no pat, good for all occasions answer. Equipment I've owned has been highly variable as to the audibility of the effects of where and on what it sits. In particular, the highly modified PS Audio HCA-2 amp I have is quite audibly affected by stands and footers. My Aloia gear seems completely stable audibly, regardless of where it sits. Now as to your question of "significant audible difference." Probably not, unless you are the personality type that enjoys arguing over how many angels can dance on the head of a pin. One thing that I like about a good rack is that it removes any worry about heavy equipment overloading it, as can happen with a cheaper rack. All told, with the maple plinths and equipment, I've probably got 300 lbs. of dead weight.

I use a heavy end table for my turntable, and a basic lamp stand for the preamp and amp. It works for me, and didn't cost me anything. They're hand-me-downs, you see. The turntable (and cd player)does not skip at high volumes or because of heavy footsteps.

I have been happy with the Boltz Steel component stands.  They are very heavy gauge steel but the thing that I have found useful is that you aren't locked into one configuration.  I have taken my component racks apart and rebuilt different configurations about eight times in the past five years.  For added weight for several of the turntable configs. I bought a scrap piece of 1 1/2" thick granite counter top for the base.

Volks, just go do what i explained first. It won't cost you a dime before you go spend a wad on a new stand.

If you search Audiogon or Ebay, "Cambre" is discontinuing some Audio racks that look pretty decent for the price.

If you are looking to optimize the sound of your gear with vibration control, check out Grand Prix Audio Monaco racks. Expensive but very effective.

The best advice I can give is to purchase a stand that is of commensurate quality with the rest of your system.

I personally like glass and hardwood shelving as these don't tend to warp as does particle board.  I am also looking for a new rack (get your minds out of the gutter :D), as I have just added a turntable to my system.

Take a look at SolidSteel.  They have several lines and also amp stands if you want to locate power amps close to speakers.  MusicDirect has them and runs specials once in a while.
