Windows and Sound Isolation
« on: 22 Nov 2009, 04:16 pm »
I dont see this discussed a whole lot and we will be buying windows for a project soon and wanted some extra sound isolation from mostly outside elements.

I have heard that tempered is better than plain glass but laminated is best.
I havent priced laminated yet but suspect its not an option and an wondering if anyone has use tempered with any success?

Or any other advise is appriciated. Thanks............

You've got it right

In order of goodness: laminated>tempered>float glass

Laminated's advantage over tempered is only at what's called the critical frequency, which is depth dependent. I wouldn't worry about it

Thanks for the reply, are you saying it's well worth looking at tempered glass?
We get alot of ambient outside noise in our current home and dont want a repeat. Thanks

Have a look on the Overly Door website, they have good information on acoustical windows.

Also consider that window construction is going to be just (if not more) important than glass type. I mean glass thickness, if you are using two separate isolated windows rather than a single unit, gap between glass panels, etc.
