New high school physics program onboard!
« on: 18 Nov 2009, 04:22 am »
We have added another local high school to our group.  In this case one physics class will try their hand at building speakers as an end of year project.   :D  At this time, we are looking for gear to build about 20 sets of speakers.

So here is where we are, I have several 4" drivers, a couple of 15" PE woofers, a a pair of 10" woofers, several misc. tweeters, a box of misc. chokes, a box of misc. caps, a limited box of resistors, several 2" ports, several binding post.

The places that we need donations are tweeters, quality connecting wire, soldering irons, and mid woofers.  For the past several years, AC has really helped make this project go, so here we are again asking for your involvement.

For those that have followed this over the years, we have  involved hundreds of high school kids in speaker building and introducing them to the world of audiophilia.  Although I've been doing this with classes for over 10 years, the project really picked up with the guidance of Danny Richie and Gary Dodd.  When the kids spend the time to do it right, they have been successful in building some very fine speakers.

If you can help us out with a donation, we are tax exempt.

Here are some pics from years past.

I've had a couple of PM's (thanks Ninja) but we still need those tweeters and mid woofers.  Over the years we have had great support, but we need you guys again.  Maybe you have a DIY project on the shelves in the garage that got cobwebs on it, or an old set of garage speakers that you like an excuse to upgrade.  Pull the drives and send them to us.  Come on guys, this is really good cause.

This is the first thing that came to mind, but it looks like they are sold out.

Looks like you're already familiar with PE, but you might also want to keep an eye on this.

We have used PE before, when we could find decent quality woofers and tweeters cheap enough.  The problem is often really cheap drivers require more extensive crossovers, both losing the savings and making it harder for a high school kid to design a successful speaker.  We have used a bunch of drivers over the years, but have had most success with Vifa buyouts, the GR-Research M130, some very nice 7" woofers donated by DIYcable.  We've tried some of the PE metal cone woofers, but the kids really have a hard time taming the breakups.

Last year Madisound made us a good deal on these...
http://www.madisound.com/catalog/product_info.php?manufacturers_id=136&products_id=1496 ... for well under $10.  We had several AC members help sponsor  :thumb:, so we had a little cash.  So far, every year, someone has come along to allow us to put quality parts into the hands of these students, which increases the likelihood of their success.  I am sure that we'll find quality woofers and tweeters again this year.

Scott,

I have two pairs of the drivers used in the Zigman Hornets that are new in the box I'd be happy to donate. Would these drivers be on interest to you? I also have at least one soldering iron and some other goodies, let me dig around and see what I can come up with.

I also intend to build a new set of Silkworms to put up for the highest bidder with all proceeds to go to your cause. I hope this helps out.

Sincerely,
John

John,
I sent a PM, but thought I'd reply as well.  We can definitely use the drivers and the soldering iron. We will have more on the auction after I have a chance to chat with you.  Thanks   :thumb:
