John, I see that things have changed a bit from the original vision of using the VLAs this time around, with possible multiple VSS subs to fill in and correct for dipole if necessary.  Will the V60s be the special signature edition, or has that changed as well?

You can add to your list of recording equipment a Korg Mr-1000 that I will be bringing.  With that we will have the option to record true DSD at either 2.8224 MHz @ 1-bit or 2x DSD at 5.6448 MHz @ 1-bit.

Hi Dave,

Have added your DSD unit to the recording chain list.

B has not clarified whether he intends to go with the DUAL BASS BCSE RM v60's yet.

Our recording engineer for CES is Jim Harger, recently retired from KGO TV San Francisco and a longtime friend.  This week we set up the basic two-mic-in-MS tube condenser microphones on a stand close to my practice piano and recorded me playing some Chopin with the mic about 6.5ft off the floor and maybe two feet behind my shoulders.

The Grace pre/processor (MS matrix mode) and Alexis Masterlink 2channel 24/88.2 recorder--which provides 17 hours of music on a single hard drive--took up the sound.

Played back through one pair of 626 Jr with no sub, the sound was startling, amazing, something you'd have to hear.  No description would be adequate.  Audiophile dream come true?  Better than live?  You name it.  I was flabbergasted, astounded.  All this done instantaneously in the "live" end of my 13x31x8ft sound room.

I then tried some cymbal crashes, playing them as loud as I could. With a small reduction in overall level the system recorded this very energic source with aplomb, and completely without overload.  The reproduced sound was as good as the live, just slightly different due to the transfer function of microphones varying from that of the ear.

We then cut a 16/44.1 CD (easy to do, since downconverting from 24/88.2 does not require further processing) off the hard drive and played it through my Krell/Wadia/Son of Ampzilla rig.  While not the equal of the hard drive sound, no one was complaining.  I conclude the CD medium is capable of great reproduction quality, even in Redbook.  Quality loss vs the HD source could not be more than 10%, if that.

We should do very well at CES!

That's High End Heresy I tell you! You will be burned at the virtual stake!
Seriously, I fully agree with you; I have too many well recorded CD's to say otherwise.

I should add we used no processing, EQ or compression of any sort to make this recording.

At CES we will do the same, and use the DSP built in to the speakers to compensate for the HF rolloff introduced by the large room, and to notch out the 30Hz air conditioner noise. We will also set up the mics closer to our musicians than we did in January.

Ever thought of starting a recording studio? You could sell speakers to play the music you record....How much does the Grace and Masterlink cost?

Don't know about the GRACE, but the Alesis ML-9600 MasterLink Disk Recorder is $1699 (if you want one, my distributor gives me a courtesy discount )

Looking forward to reading about the results!   :thumb:

For the next one  :P , would love to see recording and playback from a PC.  Plenty of great and cheap PC recording interfaces out there.  With the PC and interface, it would (on average) be more expensive than the Alesis (who doesn't have a PC already, though?), but going this route may further interest those of us in the "discless" world. . . and would be even more interesting for those of us who record music ourselves.   :D

Good luck!

Throw in Diana Krall and you might as well grow your nails and scratch the backboard.  I just don't get either of them (musically).

I would love to catch the show but I am always busy at that time of the year.   :banghead:

New Mystery VMPS Speaker

As I announced earlier, Brian has a big surprise in store, and it is a NEW VMPS SPEAKER.

In another thread he posted:

Quote
I can also say there will be a new speaker in our booth, the first new VMPS in four years, which incorporates all the lessons learned from this year's live vs recorded music demo.  Details will be available with pix in about two weeks.

So more details and pics coming up.

DEFINATELY "IN USE" if it is completed in time.
