300B SET & 96db spkers--silver cable choices?
« on: 15 Nov 2009, 01:01 am »
Apologies if this is in the wrong circle, but I figured there might be some 300B SET experts here!

I'm looking for silver speakers for my setup; I've read that with SET amps and high-efficiency speakers, a smaller awg wire (say in the 12-16 range) is preferable....any insight?

Suggestions for a pair that doesn't require a 2nd mortgage  :o?

Thanks,

Randy

Just sent you a pm.

As far as insight for wire, I have no real insight. Just try a bunch and stick with what sounds good to you. Just don't get on the merry go round too much as you can burn a bunch of $$$ on wire. The speakers and ROOM ultimately matter the most.

Best,
Anand.

In this case my personal choice is a hybrid Silver + Copper like the QED Silver Anniversary that I use since 2003,   http://www.qed.co.uk/175/gb/product/speaker_cables/silver_anniversary.htm
It is 2,5mm diameter(AWQ 12), last time I see price was 6 pounds/metre mono and the sound is transparent, natural and detailed.
It is in production since the 1990years and is 10 times cable of the year in the UK press, it is a sucessor from the vintage QED 79 Strand.
Also there is a Van del Hul CS122 silver+copper too, but not full of laurels as this QED model.
Good luck

Thanks to both of you for your ideas and thoughts; much appreciated.  I'm checking into these alternatives.

Take a serious look at Morrow Audio.

http://morrowaudio.com/

Silver coated solid core copper.   Very thin and flexible, easy to use and route.  Impeccably handmade by Mike, reasonably priced, tremendous performance.

Search here and on AudioGon forums for lots of positive comments.
I have heard my share of cable....I think it is incredible stuff.
I agree wholeheartedly with the testimonials on his website.

Sound is open, clean and clear, very natural and well balanced.  Great tone, immediacy and palpability.

Mike will take care of you.
Generous audition period means no risk.

Caution:   be sure to give this cable some serious burn time.

I got some MA3 I/C last week that I am burning silently with some white noise in a separate system.  I've been giving a sneak peek every 40 hrs or so.  Up to 150 hrs >>>>>>> doodie, crap, unlistenable, very disappointing.

 :banghead:

Popped em in today (150 hr pt) and oh my...what a transformation!

 :banana piano:

I have experienced burn in before, but never like this!  Looking forward to getting about 250 hrs on em before I put them into full time duty.  I'm already pretty sure this cable is gonna be very very special.

I came up with the following solution after making a pair of cables from an unwound Alpha-Core inductor (16 gauge). Purchase a Mundorf silver inductor on line. Unwind it and cut it to the length you want. Cut 4 pieces two for each side. Apply painters tape as insulation face to face with the conductor in the middle. Do NOT put positive and negative sides together. There you have it; a relatively cheap, easy to make pair of 16 gauge flat conductor cables. They sound fantastic and even better with cryo. On the ends you can simply cut in a spade with scissors. I still have pair of the copper cables around if you would like to try the concept. Just contact me and I can ship them to you.

Thanks all.  Driguy, thanks for the offer.  I have some cables on the way to try, so for now I will be pretty much busy trying to sort thru those.

So far my best results are coming by using both by Empirical Design copper cables, shotgunned with some Clear Day's....the cables are the same length and its each to do as the ED's are spades and the Clear Days are bananas.......

Thanks again,

Randy

1. Buy 4 of these:

http://cgi.ebay.com/10-Red-10-Black-Mil-Spec-20-AWG-Silver-Coated-Wire_W0QQitemZ310171200548QQcmdZViewItemQQptZLH_DefaultDomain_0?hash=item4837a4ec24

2. Twist into star-quad configuration with a drill. 2 red, 2 black strands per side. This stuff is available in any colors you want.

3. Strip wires and twist ends together, red w/ red, black w/ black.

4. Listen as your $25 set of speaker wires are likely as good as anything else you might use regardless of price. On the off chance you don't like it you're not out much $$$.
