Help! - Need LP12 Isolation/Coupling advice.

Need advice... LP12 - Isolate or Couple???  That is the question!

Cones/Spikes/Footers vs. Sand Boxes, Air Bladders, Sorbothane, Raquetballs or anything else "squishy"?

Or... if you have a platform between the TT and the shelf on your audio rack, maybe a combination of the two???

Thanks!

Hi StereoNut,

I split your question into a separate subject from the Vinyl Tweekers sticky thread as it merits more responses than you would likely get there.

As well, your asking a question, whereas that topic was more of a vinyl tweeker grab-bag of answers.

Feel free to change the name of your post to something more eye-catching such as 'HELP - my LP12 needs isolation - what do I do?'  :icon_lol:

Pleasure to have you....regards, John

Need advice... LP12 - Isolate or Decouple???  That is the question!

I'm confused.

I thought you could either couple or de-couple.

And isn't de-coupling the same as isolating?

To The Chair Guy - Thanks!

To Toobluvr - I guess you're right, Isolation or Coupling.  (See new thread name.)

The LP12 is a spring suspension table and does pretty well with air borne vibrations with no mods IMO. Foot falls can be a problem and many use a wall mount TT stand like the Target. Mine is sitting on a hardwood shelf and this is it. There is a Linn forum at the Vinylengine.com that might yield a broader array of answers?

In my studio, I have built in oak counter-tops. The entire system is bolted to the concrete floor and also to the walls. On that, I use some old Audio Technica footers, on top of the footers, I have a 40 pound piece of Black African Granite. Under my turntable legs I have some soft spongy stuff. Then my turntable footers are made of rubber. The motor is a SAMM (stand alone motor module) and that sits on the granite. This has resulted in an extremely black background for vinyl playback, rivaling CDs or close to it. There is also a closed cell sponge mat on the metal turntable platter. My turntable frame innards are stuffed with plasticlay as is my SAMM. It's not like I planned it to turn out like this, but that is what it took. It's pretty damn quiet and there is nothing that will make the tonearm jump, short of an earthquake, nuclear bomb or meteor.

I really don't think one thing can do it alone. It's a series of well planned executions at removing internal, external and accidental vibrations from the whole mess. My only suggestion is to experiment. If it doesn't work, try something else. I think the key is lots of sandwich material from very dense to very absorbent.

You are on a daunting task and I wish you all the luck. It's not easy at all. Be patient.

I say cones, spikes, footers. But I agree with Wayner about general isolation of the stand. The Linn is meant to be more of a "stand alone" suspended product. Do you have the Trampolin base? It's a bit squishy. I have the I version and the II version is not much of an improvement.

You can put cones inside at the mapleshade audio website by removing the base and supporting underneath the crossbracing inside the plinth instead of using its own base/feet. I don't know if it is effective or not. I leave my Linn alone, I don't find it lends itself to my own brand of tweaking!

To Mike B.:
I have a similar thread posted on Vinyl Engine within the Linn forum without much response.

To Orthobiz:
No trampolin.  The suspension was re-built less than 2 years ago, though.

I honestly want to stay away from more perminanat type of mods like the Mapleshade crossbracing etc...  One of the more recent things I read on the Better Records site was the use of Aurios.  I was wondering if anybody out there has tried them?  http://www.dccblowout.com/dept.asp?dept_id=15-014

I do have a set of Symposium Rollerblock Jrs. under my CD Player in conjunction with a "svelte shelf".  I wonder if the Rollerblock Jrs. would be better used under my LP12 and try something else under the CD player?

Oh boy!  Now I've really complicated things!
