chime finished one red light on what now?
« on: 14 Nov 2009, 03:07 pm »
Ok got all my parts in the right order and everything wired up.I'm in the home stretch :D
I have a red light that comes on on start up.Looking at the chime from the front it's the left side.
Funny enough as i turn it off it goes green.
So i have a few troubleshooting questions...
If i had put the connector wire on the wrong side would that affect the light?
I'm pretty sure i put it in right but i'm going to recheck.
I added chassis rca's.I connected the grounds on the rca's then soldered a wire to the board. Is this ok?
I accedentaly pulled a trace out.The very left prong of u401.This prong is a ground as far as i could tell.I bent the prong to the chassis and scraped the underside to give very good contact for a ground.I addad a small solder puddle on top.
u401 is part of the power supply? If i'm getting good power that should be ok?My rectifier is ok.
The red and green lights are just sides right? Then why am i getting no sound at all from the rca's or usb?

I'm useing windows vista it does not recognise the chime.
Is this normal with vista?
I'm going underneith later with a dvm.I'm going to check voltages.
Swaped out tubes too.

Well i found a mistake i have the jumper at the select switch in the wrong place.
Somehow i doubt that will cure my problem but we will see.

Swaped the jumpers and got no change.I do get some sound out the speakers though.Low level buzz volume left low level hum volume right.very low.
I have checked the voltages on the board they are all right on
Not sure what to do next.I'm going to go thru the schematic and see if i can find any problems.
What i am worried about is that in the manual it says the power led will go green until 20 seconds.
mine does this.
Then it says the front two led's will remain red until a 44.1 digital source is detected,
My right led goes green right away.
Even with nothing hooked up.
This has me worried.
I don't have a cd player anymore.Just a dvd player or a laptop running windows vista.
Is there a compatiblity problem with vista?

Does my dvd player send out a signal other than 44.1?

Not sure what to do next.

Didn't make one lick of difference.
Ok found out u 401 is not the problem.I checked the data sheet. The trace i pulled was a ground and what i did to fix it surely did.
The reversed part made no difference.
It only got rid on the minor hum/buzz at either end of the volume travel.
The left led will not go green. The right led will not go red.
They are supposed to both be red until a redbook signal is introduced right?
I tried a dvd.laptop and finally a playstation 1.
No output on any.
It will not recognize the chime in usb mode.Which is the way i want to use it as a music server, with my laptop.
what now?

tommorow i will go thru the whole unit looking for mistakes and checking voltages.

I do remember someone posting about a problem getting the chime to work because of some voltage issue on the rca's.I;m going to have to search that post.
I'm out of answers if anyone has a idea?
I will tell you this i was fooling around with the power switch.
The left side goes green and sound is produced on turn off.I got sound by playing with the switch turning it on and off quickly. So for some reason it seems that could be a qlue?

The USB section is bus powered, and you can work on it without the rest of the CHIME turned on.  Vista should still be able to recognize it.
