Hey R_burke,

If you are interested I can make you a killer deal on these:

There is a thread on those amps here: http://www.audiocircle.com/index.php?topic=65521.0

They are beutifull, but the whole package (size and $) is out of my league.

Okay then. How's this?

I have a 30 watt, pure class A, solid state amp built by Gary Dodd.

It doesn't sound much like a solid state amp though. The mid-range is very lush and tube like. The bottom end has pretty good control and is very clean. The top end leans toward the soft side especially for solid state. Not harsh or grainy. It could be tweaked a little to taste by changing the single cap in the signal path.

Front and back plates are solid Aluminum, 3/8" thick. Binding posts are solid Copper Cardas. It has a real beefy power supply with a load of power supply caps on it. It has a cooling fan in the middle of it that runs pretty quietly.

It has been very reliable and trouble free.

I'll take $750 for it. Now that's a deal!

Danny,

Which would you suggest for the V1, this one or Gary's 15W stereo unit in a roughly 15'x20' room? You can PM me if you wish.

That 15 watt amp out performs any other amp I have ever heard. Being off the grid goes a long way towards making it dead quiet and nothing really touches it in that regard, at least in tube amps. Not having to include a massive power supply keeps the cost down too, that is how Gary can offer them for so little.

You'll still need a battery and charger though.

It is a perfect match for the V-1 and Super-V models.

I found someone local who is going to try and repair my current amp, so for now my search is on hold.  None the less I for one am enjoying this thread and hope it continues regardless of my need, or lack thereof.  I would still love to see some pictures of a battery set-up if anyone has some.  The idea and set-up intrigues me, but I need to see how the whole thing looks, and how much space it takes up.

I bought a couple of small Lithium batteries for mine originally so they could be put in a small matching chassis. They run the amp for nearly 2 hours then shut down. It then takes about 4.5 hours to charge them back up.

I then bought these two bigger ones so that I could run the amp and the new battery powered tube buffer both off of the same batteries. The amp will run for 4 or 5 days all day long on these two batteries without needing a charge. These baby's are 100 amp hour batteries.

At some point I will build a nice looking box for the batteries and charger that will look cool and set off in the corner some where out of sight.

Danny,
Do you leave the charger conneted and powered up during use?  It seems that would allow AC noise to infiltrate the system.

Thanks,
Ed

I have to disconnect the charger when it is in use.

Why is that?

If the charger is not disconnected then it puts some AC noise on the line.

No big deal though. I just plug the charger in when I am through listening.

OK.  So one could certainly use a remote switch to cycel the charger on / off.  Perfect!  That's what I'll do when my buffer arrives.
