Using second set of outputs on tempest for sub
« on: 4 Nov 2009, 06:15 pm »
OK this is probably gonna be dumb but go easy on me 'cause I'm new at this...

I have a Tempest Extreme on the way and I have a question about hooking up a sub.

I have read here in this circle about using the second set of outputs on the Tempest to feed a sub. That seems strange to me because I would think that you would have to use a crossover.... somewhere.

It seems to me that if you were to use a sub that you would run from one set of outputs on the pre to the sub and then from the sub to the speakers using the crossover on the sub.

I'm confused.

Here is what I have and what I want to do...

I have a HT setup... B&W CDM 9nt mains, CDN CNT center and CDM SNTs surrounds. I have the fronts fed by a pair of Khartago mono extremes, the rears by an old pair of NAD 2155's bridged and the center by the Marantz SR8500 AVR. For subs I have a pair of SVS PC 31-25's that right now are fed by the LFE out on the Marantz.

I have been using the Marantz for everything... HT, two channel and 2 channel w subs but...

I want to incorporate the new Tempest (and a PS Audio DAC3 which is also on the way) for 2 channel listening. I will have to send it to Klaus for the HT bypass mod and I was thinking on getting a second set of outputs while it is back with him.

Ideally, I would like to also use my subs for 2 channel.

So how do I hook all this up?

The crossovers would have to be in your subs, if they don't have one, you would have to get an external crossover.

Alex,
You don't really need to have your pre modified to have a ht bypass. Just use any input(except phono), just set the volime in the same spot all the time for ht. You also don't need the 2nd set of outputs, you can use a set of y connectors. You can always add them later if you want, but you can play with the subs for the stereo without spending any money on mod's.    You will also need to change the settings in your ht receiver to no sub and the mains to large, so all the bass goes through the Tempest and the mains/sub.
Sure hope this helps

OK. I read about that from one of the AC regulars. (Somewhere around here is a pretty detailed post on doing just that.)

Jeff, so.... I don't have to worry about impedance issues. And I still use the subs' crossovers even though I'm not using the outs from the sub to the mains.

Good one. Hadn't thought about that.

Thanks

Alex,
No you there should be no impedence issues, you will be driving the subs with their own amps. You will have all the bass going through your mains as there is no crossover to prevent this. My previuos Rel sub had two inputs so that I could use it for stereo and the lfe output from my ht pre. Like I said play with it and see how you like it, you may end up just using the subs for ht and not 2 channel. I have a combined system also and we just have to make some comprimises.
