Bryston Tuner?

Thanks to breakthrough technology, the best FM tuner to ever hit the test bench is the Sony XDR-F1HD.
See:  http://www.ham-radio.com/k6sti/xdr-f1hd.htm

And it retails for less than $100:
http://www.sonystyle.com/webapp/wcs/stores/servlet/ProductDisplay?catalogId=10551&storeId=10151&langId=-1&productId=8198552921665401984

So, if Bryston were to incorporate the new technology into a Bryston box with new power supplies, a better analog output stage (e.g., Bryston discrete op amps), tweaks suggested in the article above, etc., the result would likely be the finest sounding tuner ever at a very reasonable price point.

.......and it would capture and play the digital content embedded in the signal i.e. HD 1, HD 2 etc.  Come on James, let's have it!!

You wouldn't have to worry about developing an improved analog output stage.  Just give it digital outs and watch BDA-1 sales increase.

I absolutely and thoroughly enjoy FM radio.  It is where I first heard a majority of the titles I have accumulated over the years.  Since I installed my 7's and BP26 in June 80% of my listening has been to the two stations nearby that play classical and jazz. Right now I am seriously considering plunking down $3,500.00 for the Magnum Dynalab MB102T (T is for triode output stage).  Even on my garden variety 20 year old Adcom GFT 555 I swear the sound is near CD quality if not better than many CD's on these two stations.  Plus, if I'm too lazy to go through the thought process to choose a CD to listen to I just turn the selector knob on the BP26 to tuner.  There are many weekly and nightly shows that offer a variety of music and commentary to listen to.  I will spend this money at the expense of replacing my turntable and make the tuner and SACD player my two primary sources.  I will also buy high quality balanced interconnects and a new antenna for the tuner as well.

I think this is at least the third time a thread has popped up regarding this subject in the past year so I would say FM radio has some degree of popularity out there.

Add the capability to get internet radio, without the computer on, and you'd have the high end beating a path to your door. I doin't think anyone combines HD radio and internet radio, but I could be wrong, and frequently am. And speaking of am, throw AM radio in there too. :green:

Some degree of popularity, but not enough to make it viable for Bryston to produce one.  James Tanner weighed in on this in a previous topic, and said there was no need to reinvent the wheel that Dynalab had rolling pretty well.  Not his exact words, but that was the jist.

As far as another poster wanting a Bryston tuner at a "reasonable cost", I guessed that cost would be around $2K minimum.  I don't think Bryston has hardly any components priced under that, and when you take the circuitry, a Bryston-proper power supply, Bryston quality casework, Canadian labor wages and a 20 year warranty, you're there.

Tuners are still a specialty item.  Even if you factor in the increasing number of HD radio broadcasts, that still is governed by reception and distance, and as Internet bandwith increases at it's natural progression, high-resolution Internet radio will overtake it, as you can listen to radio from all over the world with perfect reception.

And you can get Internet digital radio streams from many existing sources, from computer to music server to Squeezebox, that you can feed into your DAC.

Good points Bill,

In my circumstance, the music that I enjoy gets very little or no air time - internet stations are a totally different storey. For me, it is CDs and next year, hopefully vinyl. I do use the FM radio in the car - but mostly for classical music (no CD player in my daily driver ).

Post scriptum...

Let me know what you think of the X-05, after you remove it from all 3 boxes 8)

Be well...

I listen to FM frequently.  King FM in SEA has great classical programming and one of the Public radio stations has good Jazz each evening.  I had a vintage Sansui 717 upgraded and highly modified to improve sensitivity, selectivity, Freq. response, etc. and the audio.  It sounds excellent!  I would match it's performance against new tuners in the $3-$4K range.   I think Bryston would be hard pressed to develop a tuner that was so good folks would stand in line to buy one and certainly not at a reasonable price. There are many excellent vintage tuners that can be easily upgraded and modified to match or exceed the performance of the new ones and at a fraction of the cost.

However. a TT is another matter.  With vinyl growing in popularity I could see Bryston designing an excellent TT in the $2K - $3K that would be well received.  Look what their genius has done so far and at a reasonable price!

So, James... lets get started on the TT.....Laundrew has some great pics for you to think about!

A turntable is so far out of the logistical realm of Bryston tooling and manufacturing, that I'm certain that won't happen.  They could contract manufacture or rebadge an existing product, but that really isn't their style.

You guys are just being silly.  Bryston is an electronics manufacturer.  They didn't tool up to make turntables when turntables were the source.  Now that's it's a niche market, there's even less reason to do so now.

If James Tanner says they're thinking about it, I'll apologize for being a "killjoy", but turntables and electronic components are like apples and oranges.

Your AM/FM/HD Radio/Internet tuner is an electronic component, so I won't say that's an impossibility.  It just doesn't seem like there would be a big enough market to make it profitable, but it is certainly within their manufacturing scope.

James has been asked about a DVD player before, and I suppose that a universal player is a possibility, as there could be even more of a market for that.  But in this every changing area of digital formats, HDMI, and expensive licensing, it is no easy endeavor.  That's already been seen on the lengthy development in bringing the SP3 to market.  It took Oppo several years to bring their BD-83 to market, and that's all they were working on!

Bryston's development of the BCD-1 and the BDA-1 were solid marketing ideas.  With the many thousands of dollars many people have in their Redbook CD libraries they knew it could be a good seller.  And the BDA-1 DAC was another solid addition, as it could accomodate the ever growing multiple digital components that many people have and offer remote control input selection.

So good luck on the electronics.  I know many loyal Bryston fans would like to add to their component collection with a brand they love and trust.
