Just got a Technics SP10-MK II...
« on: 2 Nov 2009, 11:33 pm »
...on a long term loan.  A buddy has had this in his closet for about 10-12 years.  Does anyone have experience with this unit?  My guess is that this unit weighs 45-55 pounds, appears to have a marble platter top.  The arm is a Signet SK-50  and the cartridge is a Signet "Microline".
Can anyone tell me a bit more about what I have?

VERY highly sought after if original.  Many are being restored.  There are probably some dedicated websites if you google it.  I believe they were originally the ultimate DJ tables for studios.  I'd take it off your hands if it bothers you to have it wasting away

I have a SP10-MKII my Dad bought off Ebay a couple of years back before the prices took off.

The plan is to polish it and then replace all the old dried up caps, build a plinth out of a big slab of River Red Gum and mount a very good arm and cartridge on it.  Should make for a sensational result I reckon!  I did one up like this for a friend who promptly sold it for over 3K! :duh:

:o Wow!! I knew I had lucked into something interesting when I reached over to pick this thing up, and tweaked my back by reaching over closet junk to lift it.   Is anyone familiar with the tonearm or the cartridge?

Wow...any way you can turn this into a permanent loan?  :o The SP-10's are amazing, one of the premier turntable creations of all time (the Mk 3 especially). Still, you have a winner. Never used the arm, but the cart (assuming its still in good working order) is great.

If I could snap my fingers and have any turntable setup I wanted (and I mean ANY), it would be an SP-10 Mk. 3 in a custom plinth with three tonearms...you are well on your way!  8)

I expect that I will have this for at least a couple of years.  What is involved in servicing it? After sitting for so long, are there places in need of lubricant?

Albert Porter has done some pretty cool stuff with his (since sold) MKII and his MKIII.

NICE!!!
The Signet arm is a very good low mass arm. It should be great with most med/high compliance cartridges. Is the cartridge a TK-10ML? I had one of those in the '80s - very fast and detailed. It might be a tad bright. It also might be hard finding a replacement stylus, if you wind up with it.

Great table, enjoy!

The only thing that I can see written on the cartridge is Signet Microline.  What I thought was a marble plate sitting on the platter turned out to be what looks like a glass plate with a rubber insert- odd looking thing.  However, I set it up and did some listening today- the real listening will be tonight with a glass of scotch after the wife goes to bed.
