Dual refurb.
« on: 1 Nov 2009, 12:42 am »
I am purchasing a Dual 1257 table, vintage 1979, I guess.  I would like to rewire the arm, install new audio cables, clean the unit etc.  Are there any Dual groups or clubs anyone is aware of that I could join for information regarding tweaking, optimizing or just dressing up of the unit?

Much appreciated, dk

Contact the guy at fixmydual.com
There's a vintage turntable forum at yahoo groups and a classic stereo forum
There's always posting on vinylengine.com as well

how much are you spending?  if your total cost is approaching $200, you will get much better performance for not a lot more money w/a wintage empire...

Doug, please elaborate. thanks
empire turntable are yust simply kick a** turntables, imo.  i had a wintage empire 208 w/a wintage grado wood arm on it, and it came surprisingly close to the performance of my tricked-out oracle.  i have finally gotten around to getting my rare suspended-chassis empire 498's sub-chassis modded to accept a rega arm, and i am certain this will also be killer.  the empires, both unsuspended and suspended, are on ebay all the time.  (the 498 is rare - it combines the heavier platter of the earlier more common unsuspended decks w/the suspension of the later more common 598/698's.)  sometimes prices get out of hand - $400 and higher - but patience will find you one for $300 or less.  but, even at the high-end of the pricing scale, i think these are still excellent walue, compared to what else is out there.
