Cables used were the same when I had both the Hydra-8 and BPT. Silent Source Signature HC 20amp from dedicated circuit (direct to panel with JPS LAbs In-all AC cable) to the power conditioner. Kimber Cable PK10 Palladians were used on the source equipment. I had the Hydra-8 for 30 days and the BPT 3.5 for 2 days. The Hydra made an improvement, but not to the same degree as the BPT. With the BPT, more details were present and at the same time vocals were less edgy and much more natural. Individual instruments became more definable within the soundstage and took on a more realistic presence rather than "blending" with the rest of the music.
Both made my system dead quiet with no hum, buzz, or hiss of any kind- absolute silence. In terms of value, I feel the BPT is a bargain for what's inside. The Hydra-8 for $2K seems a liitle overpriced for the technology used- that's just my opinion. There is also no doubt that "balanced' power works on reducing AC noise.
I'm not sure on the video side of things, but I think it is having the same effect. I just got an Ayre D-1X DVD player that is outputting only 480i to my projector until I get the SDI card for it. I have always hated the picture my Sharp projector produced with a 480i signal and was prepared to be quite disappointed. I'm not sure if it is the Ayre or the BPT, but I was shocked at how good the picture looked. I think it is the BPT because I remember the improvements the PS Audio P600 made for video when I had it. I sold it a while ago and was running without balanced power for a while. I can't wait to try the Ayre with the SDI card and external scaler.
I have never tried any Equi-Tech products but they have a solid reputation for performance and build quality. I think they are all UL approved, but lack the "custom" tweaks Chris uses in his products- Z Sleeve, ERS, etc. The transformers are of a similar design and I have heard Chris pays a premium for the special transformers used in his conditioners. The BPT has a nice 'high end' look to it with the machined faceplate while the Equi-Tech units are more businesslike.
For my system, the BPT has been a revelation and I think it is an outright bargain when you consider the performance, what's inside, build quality, and appearance.
