Everyday - Buddy Holly . . . from the first lp I owned. What a shame he died so young

You Were on My Mind - We Five . . . loved the harmonies and crescendo at the end--still a favorite

I Want to Hold Your Hand - The Beatles . . . walking through the hallways in high school, holding hands and singing at the top of our lungs

White Bird - It's a Beautiful Day . . . the first time I heard this song was the first time I was stoned, with headphones

Cowgirl in the Sand - Neil Young . . . My favorite song by one of my all-time favorite artists

I could list some honorable mentions, but it might take several hours

Assuming #3 is Whiter Shade of Pale, I could easliy list these as honorable mention and some might make my top 5 if I did this on different day at a different time.

I am going to cheat and name two songs and then some albums/artists because back then many albums were put together with less emphasis on selling single 99 cents mp3s (there weren't any of those damn things) and more emphasis on the album as a complete work of art. And those albums more than any single song shaped the next decade (or so) of my life musically.

There was never music in my home and I was too young to drive and have a car radio. When I graduated from high school an uncle gave me a transistor radio. I took it to work with me every day and got hooked on music. We Five was getting a lot of air play with "You Were on My Mind" and I never got tired of it. Still a Beverly Bivens fan to this day (their lead singer). I can't remember any other music from that summer.

A summer or two later "White Rabbit" was the most haunting song in my memory. Grace was spooky and I loved it. That was probably the single song that was my impetus toward improving my stereo thus starting me on a dangerous, slippery, slope. Yes, I tumbled down that rabbit hole.

Between those dates Judy Collins introduced me to Joni Mitchell by covering three of her songs on the album Wildflowers. After that I was a hopless folky/singer-songwriter fan. (Dylan, Baez, Ian & Sylvia, Lightfoot, Collins, and of course, Joni Mitchell.

like a lot of you have mentioned before it's hard to get down to 5, but these 5 have "imprinted" (for different reasons) on my soul. There are more but these are perhaps the most significant for me. I'm kinda surprised that I put Crazy in there, because I really don't like country but ever since I first heard it it has haunted me. The others have opened up doors in my mind and in music that I still love and explore daily.

I don't think this is cheating

, in fact I was thinking the same thing as I was trying to narrow my list to 5 (I can't believe I left White Rabbit off my list. Grace along with Stevie Nicks and Chrissie Hynde are my three all time favorite female vocalists (I would now add Neko Case and expand my favaorite list to four).

A few of the many albums that would top my list as complete works of art are Dark Side of the Moon; Days of Future Past; Abbey Road; The Yes Album and The Joshua Tree.

1. The World is Waiting for the Sunrise - Firehouse Five, age 5. First feeling of life beyond the mundane, still gives me shivers to hear it. My musical egg tooth.
2. Once In a While - Clifford Brown, age 6. My grandmother gave me this record, she didn't know what it was. It changed my life, and many other jazz musicians. I ask an important question to myself while listening to Clifford play this, I have lived well by the answers I get.
3. Koko - Charlie Parker, age 12. Blinding flash of religious awakening, like from Kriya guru. Bird's personal power was awesome, every young boy needs a strong hero. His tragedy kept me off booze and drugs at big city music schools.
4. In the Stone - Earth, Wind & Fire age 15. First pop music I paid attention to, danced to this music with my first serious friends. Before that I was a loner, only interested in jazz.
5. Sailing, Lady, Love on the Rocks, Truly, Endless Love, My Love - love songs for my girls in high school, they're all the same song, but it was a busy three years! I stuck with the last girl - going on 26 years now! But My Love was the weakest song.

That's just the first 5. Does not include Beethoven which eclipses all of the above nowadays.

With each of these picks I can still relate to a specific moment in time where the song burned in. There are many others but the memory of the moment conjured up with these is powerful for me.

OK, cheating on #6. Music Appreciation 101, played on a huge roll-around mono rig, Smetana's "The Moldau". Painted an unbelievable musical picture of that river as if I were canoeing down it. Hooked on the Romantic classics since then.

The Tennessee Waltz - Patty Page, I don't know why but this song stops me an my tracks till its over. This is my favorite version, but i have 11 other artists doing it

Tom Traubert?s Blues - Tom Waits 1977 Wow I've spent a lot of time having Tom sing to me When i was sad, when i was happy I remember the first time i heard Tom i was just back from a 6 month deployment with the USN and was watching SNL and He came out and sang "Eggs & Sausage" went out the next day and picked his firs 4 lp's been a fan ever since.

Red Right Hand - Nick Cave and the Bad Seeds. 1996 I had stoped listening to music in the early 80's There was just nothing i heard that i wanted to listen to on the radio. Then one night i was up late and caught a public access video show and they played the video for this song and after 14or 15 years there was was something i was interested in hearing more of. So i ran to the local record store to get the LP and all they had were these little disks called cd's that i had never heard of before. i took 3 Nick Cave cd's with me and stoped at the wizz for a cdp 3k cd's later and way better Stereo then i ever thought of owning i'm here typing this list up Still not a lot of stuff i like in the 80's but ive found a few. While i will go back and visit a few old friends Allman brothers Humble Pie ect i spend way more time listening to new music

Kathy's Clown - Everly Brothers Their sweet harmonies are wonderful, but the harder edge of this song makes it special. You have to love some of the "be a man" lyrics: "I've gotta stand tall, you know a man can't crawl."

Don't Worry Baby - Beach Boys To me, this is the quintessential Beach Boys -- simply beautiful singing about love and car racing.

Solitary Man - Neal Diamond I hope I don't get laughed out of the room for admitting I like a Neal Diamond song.

Hey Joe - Jimi Hendrix I remember hearing Hey Joe on the radio and thinking I had never heard anything like it before, especially the guitar playing. And then I saw a picture of Jimi and I knew I had never seen anyone like that before! Still my favorite Hendrix song.

Pancho and Lefty - Emmylou Harris I like everything she's ever done, but this is the best.

Solitary Man is a great song. It sounded so good on my girlfriends parents console compared to our little Magnavox record player. It could have been on my list. And Don't Worry Baby was the "B" side of the I Get Around 45.

Dave Brubeck "Take Five" My dad used to play Brubeck a lot. This one always stuck with me.

Len Barry "1,2,3" I heard this off a jukebox in a pizza joint.

Strawberry Alarm Clock "Incense and Peppermints"

Beatles "I Want to Hold Your Hand" or "She Loves You", not sure which stuck with me first.

Simon and Garfunkel "Sparrow" From their first album, it was a Hanukkah gift from my aunt and uncle.
