Widely talked about are the many modders within our hobby, yet I haven't seen nary a mention of Mr. Hillig's work.  I was wondering if anybody had any dealings with him/them?

I've been intrigued, this guy has been around a long time - that usually counts for a lot.  I know he has served in an engineering capacity for Hafler Corporation (my Series 915 preamp even have a couple of his Musical Design film caps to prove it) and he has long modded Dynaco's.  His parts upgrade list includes many goodies like FRED diodes and lots and lots of Blackgates caps.

So, what dies anyone know about this man and his work?

Hi Chairguy,

Johns shop is just outside of St Louis in St Peters, Missouri. He has a fair sized shop where he stores all of his parts and customers gear to be modded. As memory serves, it's John and two other people that do the mod's to all the gear. John also sells Halfler upgrades (complete boards)boards for the old Halfer amps. He also offers a host of mods to quite a few well known pieces.

John does good work for a fair price. He defiantely likes the sounds of Black Gates and tantelum resistors. Quite of few of the mods John and I have done on my amps have had to do with playing with the negative feedback on an amp to clean up the sound a bit. Not to mention the usual mods like building new rectifier bridges out of Shottkeys, modifying power supplies (bypassing and whatnot). Pretty much the typical mods most of us think about.

John produces a fine sounding tubed preamp (6922) plus a couple of solid state amps. A couple of the guys here in town go to him on a regular basis. One of them (Sturgus) just got has Acoustic Research SP-16(?) back. Talk about a dramatic improvement. After hearing it I'm tempted to fine and rebuild one myself.

Bottom line, John does a very good job. He has a good ear and knows design (inside and out). He's not just a replacement mechanic. At times, as with any company, John can get backed up on orders and mods but he does eventually get them out.

SCott F.,

Thanks for your reply...it's strange that very little or no mention of Mr. Hillig is made on AudioCircle (or previously Harmonic Discord).  He seems to have great credentials and I know he's been around a while.

Nice to hear you MO folks keep him busy and happy.

I spoke to him about 2 months ago as I thought of his preamp as a finalist to upgrade to, but went another route.  He was very low key and easy going - not pushy at all.  It was very pleasant short (10 minute() phone call, tho.

Thanks for this.  I've used Stan Warren on a couple items, and they have been massively improved for very reasonable money, but Stan's lack of email knowledge, slow response time and too long talks on phone are starting to bother me.  He's a very nice man and certainly qualified, but I think Mr. Hillig may be a tad more expesnive, but a little bit more professional.  I'm wiling to pay for it to forgo some grief.

Hi there,

I have an Adcom GFA-7400 (5 ch) modified by John Hillig that I really liked.  You can find plenty of post about John Hillig or Musical Concepts at AA.   His website musicalconcepts.com

I'll second what Scott F. said about John Hillig of Musical Concepts (and Musical Design).  I've had 5 pieces that John has modified for me over the years (including a B&K EX442 amp, Hafler XL280 amp, and a Hegman Hapi 2 preamp).  The performance of all of them improved noticeably and the prices he charged were really reasonable, well worth the cost sonically.  Plus he turned them around quickly.

I've also had Stan Warren modify equipment for me, and I've owned equipement from Frank Van Alstine.  Along with John, each does excellent work.  John and Frank have the quickest turnaround, though, and are the easiest to get a hold of when you have questions or want something done to your equipment.

For my serious listening I use an Ultra Platinum Hafler 220 that John built and a stock SP-2B preamp.  I've run through quite a few expensive amps and preamps, first with a set of Gallo Nucleus References, then with my modified Newform Research 645 speakers, and the Ultra Platinum Hafler is the smoothest solid state amp I've listened to outside of the Ampzilla 200 monos (which I couldn't afford).  The $1000 worth of Blackgate caps in the modded Hafler really makes it sweet and detailed. And the standard SP-2B preamp is surprisingly good for the money, too, especially when you use his interconnects and NOS tubes.  One day I'll probably go for the upgrade to the signature or platinum editions.

John's equipment and modifications are really musical, without the glare, grain, and "hard" sound that too many solid state pieces have.

John doesn't get much press, which is too bad, because he's honest, does high quality work quickly, charges prices that are extremely fair, and is pleasant to talk to on the phone.  He's been in business a long time, so he's clearly doing something right.

All I can add is

1) I exchanged e-mail with John concerning his D 75B amp, and my questions were answered promptly..

2) His D 100B amp received pretty good reviews- I think it was Positive Feedback Online. Do a search for Musical Design D 100B on google and you'll find it.
