I have here a pair of Quad 988s that are in excellent shape and have been modified with CablePod binding posts from Eichmann; pure, solid silver wire from the Cable Pods to the internal boards, and finally, as some may know all of the musical signal going to a Quad has to pass through a 200uF electrolytic cap in its way to the panel. The previous owner also had that removed and an equal value of film capacitor was substituted resulting in greater dynamics and far better sound quality.
I can also vouch for the fact that they sound much better with the socks off. The grill material really is quite heavy and muffles the true capability of this wonderful speaker. Alas this speaker could not satisfy my deep bass needs. The sub I tried was very nice it was still a sub with Quads and not as whole as I wanted.
They come with the original boxes and packing so they can be shipped. They also have a trick isolation stand that the previous owner had made up. Basically you get a pair of big thick planks of hardwood that sit on three big brass points (points up into the wood). Then the speaker?s front edge of its base sits on two notched oak pegs spaced about one-third and two-thirds of the base?s width apart. Then a third smaller brass point is placed under the center back of the speaker?s base. I have the original packaging and can ship them. $2800 OBO
